I quite like the idea of serviced apartments with at least 2 rooms and kitchen. That way you can prepare your meals (if you wanted) and have a proper sized fridge as well.
Failing a 2 bedroom suite at a hotel (which obviously would be hideously expensive), I think a serviced apartment would be a more economical way to go. Particularly if you wanted to stay for 2 weeks or so.

has anyone tried staying at serviced apartments and know any good sites?

I'm thinking staying in Hong Kong, New York, UK and Vancouver.

in terms of staying at a non-hotel, I've heard of airbnb, although I would prefer to stay in those where the owner is not with you.

The owner is not always with you for properties found on airbnb. Some just rent you their apartments whilst they are out of town.

just be careful in New York. There is a law making it illegal to sublet an apartment in New York unless it is a condominium or for longer than 30 days..Sure there are lots of sites advertising rentals but most are illegal. You will get lots of people saying I stayed in this or that apartment and had no problems.that does not make it a legal rental. You may be the one who comes back to your apartment one day with your luggage on the sidewalk and the locks changed.

I Hong Kong i stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment at Harbour Plaza Metropolis not sure if they do 2 beders but it wan't bad.

In my last job I stayed in quite a few of The Ascott properties, mainly because the client I was working for had a good deal with them. They have a variety of properties in Europe, Middle East, Asia and Australia. They have three brands The Ascott, Citadines and Somerset - their level of service is roughly equal to 5, 4 and 3 star hotels respectively.

It is nice to have a bit more room especially if you are staying for more than week. Sometimes I would throw parties - the extra space and facilities does come in handy.

I have used VRBO on a number of occasions (Paris, Washington DC, Maui, Honolulu) and have been pleased with what was offered.
We've always found something that fits our budget too.

propertystore provides you with access to a large selection of specifically selected properties: Completed homes , House and land packages, Apartments, Townhouses, Off the plan and Off the plan investments.

I'm starting to think these properties are way better value than a hotel room.
Kind of depends how you value things I'd suggest (i.e. no access to room service usually or breakfast) but yes, I've stayed at plenty of these where the equivalent in a hotel room would have been twice the price.

Serviced apartments in HKG

Anyone got some suggestions on good and inexpensive serviced apartments in Hong Kong? We're interested in going there for the Chinese New Year next year for about a week. There'd be 10-12 adults, one infant, one child aged 9.

Ideally we'd have a nice view of the harbour fireworks.
