This is a pretty newbie question for me, given my shopping habits and trips to the US.

I am thinking of ordering some stuff online and getting it shipped to the hotel we will stay at next week in California. Do I just ship it? Do I email the hotel and let them know? What can I do to ensure the parcel gets there and stays there until I check in??

I normally ship stuff to work or a friend's house before a trip, and have never shipped to a hotel.

I have never had a problem shipping to hotels, and normally get them to put a note on the reservation while the address has "guest in residence 12/3-15/4 " added as an example.

Let the hotel know you will have a parcel coming and try and time the arrival to your stay. Of course some hotels are better than others, brand name hotels are generally better than a little roadside hotel. However, the hotel may charge you to hold/receive the parcel. Maybe email them ahead of time to let them know it's coming?

They will tell you what their policies are and if there are any costs involved.

I've done it...
Email the hotel and let them know what to expect.
Tip a couple of dollars per parcel when you pick it up.
Everyone is happy :)

I'd ensure the dates of stay are understood by the American "3/12/2013 - 4/15/2013"

Yep this ^^

Ask first and see what they say

If in the USA then tip when picking it up and also put the date in the USA format or they will be VERY confused!

Thanks oh AFF hive mind :)

I have ordered some parcels, still need to check with the hotel, but have added dates in "guest 6-10 Oct" kind of format.

I would let them know that you are doing it just as a matter of courtesy and also so they don't send it back as well.

I've had a suit delivered to a hotel.

I gave the front desk a heads up regarding the delivery.

This is what I received recently when I made the enquiry to "alert" them:

".... Thank you for your message to Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. I appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your query regarding your package to xx_xx.....
Please be assured that once we receive your package, my team will safely deliver it to you upon your arrival. This service is available for you at USD 10 receiving fee per package. The package must be sent attention to the registered guest. Hotel will hold packages for an additional USD 7...."

There you go, USD10 for the service .... per item.

Have to make sure to tick "ship together" from Amazon.com

Sounds about right for what I received from SLS in Beverly Hills recently

Again, be sure to tip another $5 when picking it up

I have emailed Hilton Honors about it, as I can't find an email address for the hotel. #WebSearchFail

I've done this once at a hotel in Hawaii.

Package arrived a few days before I did. Just called the hotel and they were all very helpful. Didn't charge and I didn't even think to tip  Bet they spat in my coffee for the rest of the week!

For dates, to avoid confusion with our North American brethren I have found it easiest to specify the month textually.

e.g. Oct 2, 2013 or 2nd Oct 2013; Never 2/10/13 or 10/2/13.

I've done it at a Hilton in the US, addressed as others have said above. There was no fee, I didn't tip, and I didn't forewarn them (it arrived 1 day before me - I'd tried to time it for just after my arrival but the estimated delivery time was generous).

$10 a parcel? Yikes, that's a lot.

I always have parcels sent to US hotels and never been charged. I hope this isn't the norm now.

Same here - had it delivered to Hilton in the US. About 3 boxes appeared in my room one day when I came back. I did tell reception a couple of days beforehand.
