Flying Economy with my wife to Singapore mid-June on a Singapore Airlines A380 (daytime time flight) and returning on Qantas QF10 - night flight :( I've put in for a FF Biz upgrade but it's 160,000 points foe 2 x upsizing and won't know until 5hrs before blastoff. Is this a waste of good points? I'll have Silver QFF with one more flight before this trip. Should I save those greedily-saved points for a rainy day or stuff it, just use them?

I am reading this correctly- you requested an upgrade for 2 passengers on SIN-MEL on QF10 from discount economy to business class using Qantas FF points?

Singapore to Melbourne is ~3750 miles - Zone 5 and therefore should only be 40,000 pts per passenger, ie 80,000 pts total.

Oops... Thanks for that correction. Well that's probably not too bad then. I read of people getting "free" upgrades at check-in, but this seems inlikely, no?

Unlikely for a low-status FF, unless you can convince them you’re on your honeymoon ;)

depending on your credit card though, isn't it 2 for 1 for the points transfer. So Singapore Airlines might want 80,000 points, but if transferring from your CC it would be 160,000.

i've always had immediate upgrade if it was available. i didn't realise that Sin were like Qantas and wouldn't gurantee until that day. which is why i've given up QFF.

Aaah, will give you a polite response as you are relatively new to AFF, but the OP was actually referring to upgrading the Qantas sector not the Singapore Airlines sector.

When was the last time you won a major prize in a lottery?

The OP is going over on SQ and returning on QF.

same for QFF, 80,000 Qff points is 160,000 from my credit card.

Forget the number of points, just do the upgrade.

If your wife doesn't travel very often then she will be impressed with the level of service and make the journey a trip to remember. You'll have brownie points for quite a while.

In me experience I prefer to make the outbound leg the celebration leg. If you can swing the upgrade on your SQ sector that would be very good especially on the A380 with the widest J seat.

SQ upgrades are immediately confirmed if available, QF has the disadvantage of not knowing until close to the date.

same for QFF, 80,000 Qff points is 160,000 from my credit card.
Depending upon some commonly available Credit/Charge cards, 80K QFF points could represent spending of between $160K and $32K.

If you've never flown business class, then the first time is always an experience. However this is not a sector I would recommend upgrading. The night time flight is short (~7 hours). After having a quick meal, you'll probably want to get as much sleep as possible (a few hours) and then you'll need to wake up again.

If you have the opportunity to fly QF long-haul again another time, I'd consider saving your points until then. If not, then go for it.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Yes the night flight thing is something to consider. I flew QF to Singapore earlier in the year during the day in business on a A380 and it was pretty nice. I then switched to an Air France 777 which had business seats hard as rocks and wouldn't recline very far. But the flights attendants were very nice and food was good. I think I'll keeep the points until that rainy day (or a daytime long-haul flight).

From personal experience, once your wife tries J, she won't go back to Y. Its amazing how my first upgrade for her has cost me so much...

I'm a bit slow for a Friday afternoon - and a long week - but 160K points to upgrade from Y -> J doesn't make sense, especially when it's 60K points confirmed J award, so two tix = 120K points

Yes I think I misread the points summary. It said 80,000 points and I assumed that was for 1 person. But my reading of the Qantas FF says it is 120K points to Singapore in buiness = 240,000 for two people. Sorry that's return. Yes you are right 60k one-way for one person.
