In England we have a great service provided by a company called giffgaff, for no more than a tenner (GBP 10) you get 250 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data. Now, I know there's no way you would get anything close to that in Australia but what I'm wondering is how low you can go with getting a SIM card that is to be used for a short period? Pre-requisites would be 50-100mb data, and enough credit to send some txt messages and make a few calls. I've been out of the country long enough now, that I've pretty much lost touch with what's current in Australia!

I think I'll actually spend a little more on the SIM and get SIM Kit Prepaid on Bean Counter, then add on a $5 data pack. Should be enough for 3 days I would hope!

Would you like one of us to organize and post it across?

I fly out Tuesday! (last minute trip) I'm going to have it delivered to my parents place and will pickup from there (it says they will post a SIM to a PO Box, which I still have however the address form says otherwise when trying to fill it in!). Thanks for the offer though! :)

It's only unlimited texts in oz. so if you're planning to text back to England you might get stung?

No plans to text back to England. My wife has Skype, so easy enough to get hold of.

Looks like you can get Red Bull SIMs via certain physical locations, not that they show it easily on their website. e.g. the FAQ says:
[h=4]Red Bull MOBILE Stockists[/h] Store locator available soon. Please call 1300 475 475 to find a location near you or recharge from this website.

However I've found Red Bull MOBILE Australia: Locations

Pretty sure I saw these in Dick Smith the other day.

BP / Coles Express will be the best option for me, don't think DSE will be open at 5am ;)

DSE would not be open at 5am.

Telstra Pre paid Encore is good value for app $32 you can get $250 worth of calls and 400mb of data.

the $250 can be used for international calls and after 6pm to 6am all your call are no charge to Aust standard phone numbers.

I have a spare [unused] virgin SIM card I can express post to anywhere in Oz tomorrow; should arrive at destination Tuesday.

All that's required is activation under the plan you wish.
