SIM card in USA for iPad

Just returned from five weeks road trip and bought a SIM card for iPad for the first time. $30 for 30 days with about 2 GB through T Mobile. While their coverage was a bit unreliable, it was well worth having.

AT &T might be better next time. Does anyone know? Being able to use google maps on iPad was fantastic. With a week or so in Canada where it didn't work we weren't able to use up all the data .

Very happy with this decision.

I fully agree about T Mobile. I found their coverage very average. I was driving on the freeway between Orange County and LAX and had no service.

I will definitely try AT&T next time.

I used AT&T last trip to USA no probes at all for near 30 days use.

I have only ever used T-Mobile in the USA, so no experience with other carriers. I use a 30-day plan for the i-phone and laptop. Suits me and have been very happy.

Another vote for AT&T. I travelled across the US from Chicago to San Francisco and had coverage most of the way. There were a few desert regions that did not have coverage but overall the coverage was very good.

Another vote for AT&T. I choose to buy one of their mobile hotspots so I could connect my laptop, phone + other devices if I needed.

Invaluable for Google maps on the phone, restaurant reviews etc

I use an app called GPS co pilot for road navigation throughout the USA. You can get a free download for the first region e g USA but pay (not a lot) for subsequent regions. It works extremely well in Europe as well.

Do you need a SIM card to be active with that one? Sounds fantastic. I will share that with friends as I hadn't heard of it. Many thanks. Must plan another trip now!

SIM card not required but the iPad needs to have the inbuilt GPS of course.

I have used both T-Mobile and AT&T and have found AT&T to definitely have the best coverage and speed. It probably doesn't matter so much when in larger cities such as NYC or Chicago but the more remote you get the worse T-Mobile gets. AT&T are the only carrier of the 2 that have coverage in Alaska also and I was very happy with the coverage there too (no coverage right in the middle of Denali etc).
