Hello AFF,

I'm currently looking at flying SIN-SYD in February next year. I have a choice of QF6 on the 747-400 at 1945hrs or BA at 2015hrs on the 777-300 for the same price on the Qantas website (and perhaps cheaper if I have a look on BA).

I've never flown BA before so am keen to try them out and see what the difference is like. What are people's thoughts and is either flight going to offer me a better chance of upgrading into Y+ or J? (PE is available on the BA website for in effect A$200 cheaper - how does this compare in terms of SCs/points gained and the nature of the seat?)

All depends on the class in my view

BA J > QF 747 J - has fully flat v lie flat beds
QF PE > BA PE - QF is J-, BA is Y+ so food/drink much better on QF
Y is Y

If you can get the QF A380 then probably QF.

With QF points you can only upgrade on QF metal.
Points/ SCs will be the same across both BA and QF

I am doing a couple of those in J next year BA15 QF1 QF2 QF5 and QF6. Will be my first time A380 but I assume that will be my preference. As you mention it would be QF6 these are pretty old worn down aircraft. PE will give you a better (slightly better on BA) seat, more SC's and if on QF better food and drink.

I've had nothing bad bad experiences on BA - but have only flown Y so can't talk about Y+ or J. The customer service in Y has been dreadful on the several occasions I've had the misfortune of Qantas code shares with them either Mel-Sin or Sin-LHR (or vice versa). I will now go out of my way to avoid them, even if it means flying on a day/time that's less convenient.

Is it a 777-300ER or a 777-200? The Y and Y+ products vary significantly between the types. Last I heard, the 77W doesn't make the trip out to SYD. If you're looking at Y or Y+, I would take QF over BA as the BA product is not in the best condition and since they have no plans to upgrade their fleet to the new product found on the 77W, I would avoid it like the plague.
If you're looking at J then they're both good.

BA15/16 is a 777-200ER. In Y, it's much of a muchness, really, although I have a preference for the QF catering. Still, I skip the meals most of the time, as you really need to try to get as much sleep as possible for this short-ish red-eye flight. Both the QF and BA flights are codeshared with each other, so check both BA and QF, and get it from the cheaper one (ignoring ff points considerations).

IMO,

If A380 then QF is a must in all classes.

If J then BA over QF 747 purely based on the fully flat bed

If Y or Y+ probably QF
