I've been doing well at Delta's Newark & Atlanta lounges, but Detroit don't want to know about me. Got the flat-out rejection the other day. Only reason I let it slide was the 15 minutes until boarding, but of course I wrote to the Platinum line about it. Stupidly I had forgotten in the fuss that I'm Platinum via Status Match with Alitalia's Frecca-whatever program so that probably would have got me in.

I've had bad experiences at the Detroit lounges too. Most recently I had a delayed flight so I went to the lounge to wait, I produced my BP and they told me you can't enter because my flight is scheduled for departure according to my BP. Told them that it had been delayed (which they should already have known). Then they told me to produce my passport because I look underage (just to cause some more trouble).

Ignoring the issue with the people at the desk, the lounges there are quite nice, food is sub-par as usual though.

In Skyteam, status does not get you into a lounge on domestics...

OP - It would be interesting to know what VA status you were at the time of booking, and if you put your number in at that time or added it later.

Speaking from personal experience, and discussions on this forum, I was Gold at the time of booking MEL-SIN-HND/KIX-SIN-MEL last year, but not when I actually travelled. Gold was going to expire after I had booked, but by the time I got to HND I would requalify.

SQ systems pull through status at the time of booking - I was actually Silver when I checked in (checked in online first to make sure that the boarding pass had it), and it printed PARTNER GOLD on the boarding pass. So we used the J check-in to drop bags with no hassles, priority baggage tags, were encouraged to go to the lounge in MEL and had no problems going into the SilverKris lounge in MEL and no hassles when boarding early. Same with departing SIN (we had a few days stopover) - no hassles checking in at W check-in (still got Business Class priority bag tags), no questions at the KrisFlyer Gold lounge (not worth it, IMHO, but at least we checked it out). Technically qualified by the time we landed in Japan, so when we left Osaka, I at least felt legitimate in the knowledge that I actually was Gold in the VA system (of course, boarding passes still said PARTNER GOLD), though no SQ operated lounges in KIX.

So in sum, I'm surprised you had problems, but I wonder if you were Silver at the time of booking, hence when you made Gold, their systems didn't reflect it?

And this is the problem of being in an "alliance" that's not really an alliance at all. I know of pax in the US (outside of major hubs like LAX and SFO) where DL staff have simply said they've never heard of Virgin Australia!!

That's odd. DL is prob the one airline I've never had an issue with. No lounges at minor ports but I've never had an issue with extra baggage, priority lines etc even in small domestic ports like GEG or ELP on DL or their small international ports like MGA or YYC.

Sky Priority (which grants the benefits you mentioned) doesn't allow lounge access, so it's possible some lounge staff aren't aware of the eligibility for VA status pax.

I believe that's why I've been caught up before.
