Am curious as to whether anyone else has sat on the Tarmac at Dallas when flying the direct route to Aussie while bags have been unloaded because of weight issues?

Also if others have experienced bing re-routed to Akl or Noumea on the DFW to Aussie route to refuel.

Many thanks,

During the summer heat the fuel expands so less can be loaded. One fix for this is to reduce the load of freight /baggage so the plane uses less fuel.
The other issue can be the headwind on the long journey to Australia.
Then you needed a safety margin as planes are not gliders.

Fuel in aircraft is measured by weight not volume when it comes to jets, volume changes won't make any difference to range in that context, although its sold by volume, however in most cases at the point of filling it comes from an underground supply which will be temperature stable across the year. Most refuelings are done as close as possible before departure to minimise the expansion from the Sun on the tanks.

At certain times of the year the LAX flights also divert, it's mostly the headwinds that are to blame.

Yep,

This is one of the many problems with this flight.

I know someone who does this flight a few times a month and she has told me they either send the luggage via LAX back to SYD and if the gods all work out the luggage gets back to Aust to meet the flight.

Or you get a stop over in NAN or Noumea have not heard of AKL being a stop for re fueling.

Many thanks,

It has happened to me on an CBR ADL flight. It was wet and they offloaded bags giving weight as the reason. It was a full flight. Only happened once to me domestically

You can't control the weather - the airline will do all it can to avoid diverting/diverting bags/offloading passengers but you really can't make the call until the flight is about to leave or when it is in the end.

It is an interesting one - if you are an Aussie going home, not going with your bag is probably not the biggest issue. But if you are an American etc travelling, you really do need your bag. But the diversions are costly in time and can result in crew going out of hours, adding to the delay.

Hi There

Yes, it happened to me, July 10th- but it was due to bad weather in Brisbane they apparently couldnt land because of fog. They diverted to Noumea to refuel. We landed in Brisbane approx 2hrs late.

This had been my second trip back to Aust. from DFW, first trip went without a hitch.

Funny how it can change. My return flight was perfect. Tho I have seen many bad flights / re routing etc. bit of a fail

I am sure AKL has been used (may have been a medical diversion rather than a true fuel stop). Was not long after the flight started. There is already a whole thread on this route.
