I'm planning for a trip this time next year and am thinking of going to possibly two European ski resorts (thanks to USDM).
Munich and Salzburg as cities to fly into come to mind but I am open to any suggestions.

Just looking at some Google searches and Obertauern (transfer from Salzburg) comes up. This link (although old) also has some info.

I'm a beginner-intermediate but don't see myself doing anything harder than a blue run and just want to get better.

This site seems to have a good amount of info on European ski resorts in general.
Ski Austria

If anyone has any reports of where they have skiied in Europe (doesn't have to be near MUC or SZG) I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

After some more searching, Innsbruck looks good for what I want and I'll want to stay there instead of one of the above (maybe just do Austria this time) - anyone?

Don't ski myself. I know my brother skied at Innsbruck and Kitzbuhel when he lived in Munich. Sorry I'm no other help

I am not a skier but we travelled by train through Innsbruck in 2013 on our way to the Dolomites. Pretty good transport connections around there.

The only place I've been skiing in Germany was a town called Oberjoch, just near the Austrian border. It's approx 2 hour drive from Munich.

I'm only a (very) occasional skiier and was there for the weekend, and found the runs suitably challenging for my skill level.

Do a Google search and you'll find info about the runs, location, etc.

I stayed at the Lanig Hotel which was nice, but I wouldn't exactly call it a resort. ;)

Thanks everyone, much appreciated! Any more comments are greatly appreciated.

I ended up booking 4 nights in Innsbruck, 22 hours in Vienna and 6 nights in Salzburg.

Zermatt
Val d'Isère
Les Trois Vallées (The Three Valleys)
St Anton

Are my top picks!

Thanks, looks like those places are nowhere near where I'll be - might have to go another time!

So none of your suggestions are in Germany and only one is close!. Agree these are all great resorts but only St Anton is really close. In general I would have thought basing yourself in Austria is a better bet, there are literal dozens of resorts you can try.

Spent 4 wonderful nights in Seefeld in my younger days. Didn't ski......but jeez, I had a great time!

Thought I'd update this, got back recently.
I stayed in Innsbruck and Salzburg.

I found some cheap places on airbnb and they were great. I have only had good experiences with that site.

In Innsbruck, they have several free ski buses from the city and taking the bus, even on the non-ski lines, is also free (when I offered to pay and the drivers saw me with ski gear, they said it was free). The other resorts that I didn't go to were slightly further away and it appears that they have dedicated free ski buses from the city.
Snow was OK but not great by Austrian standards, the locals say the season is starting later and later every year and the amount of snowfall seems to be decreasing. It still snowed lightly every day I was on the slopes except for one.

I went to Nordkette, a 20 min bus ride (normal line service) from the city.
Innsbrucker Nordkettenbahnen - Cable Railways
and Patscherkofel, a 25-30 min bus ride (same line as Nordkette but in the other direction). There is another lift/bus stop called Olympia express which has the same bus letter as Patscherkofel, but there are different buses going to different "splits" at the end of the line, so one does not necessarily go to the other - if that makes sense.

I didn't go to the Stubai Glacier, a larger resort, but there is one closeby called Schlick 2000, that I probably should have because I found out later that more lifts were open and the runs were longer.
The other resorts seem to be close enough to go to every day if you are staying in the city of Innsbruck.

Salzburg was great, I stayed within walking distance to the city and whilst there are many resorts in the area, there aren't that many that are all that close (ie an hour or less on the bus). Snow here was better than Innsbruck. Again, not great, but there were some parts where I felt like there was too much powder (ha!). Well, relatively speaking.
The only one I went to was Gaissau/Hintersee, about an hour from the city (free bus, normal line). I did see a couple of other dedicated ski buses in the city but didn't really find out the details for them.
The bus takes you to Hintersee, which is the "intermediate" side of the mountain. More reds (intermediate) than blues (beginner).
You get to Gaissau by going to the top and skiing to the other side, which is more blue and fantastic for a relatively inexperienced skiier like me.
To get back to Hintersee, you go to the top and cross but you have to hike a little bit to get back to the Hintersee slopes.

If I was going back again I'd look at staying at one of the resorts a bit further away (1-2+ hrs), or if in a group, hire a car even, especially if you are going to be there for more than a few days.

Even though the original question was asked a year ago, I can give Some information on Obertauern. As a schoolboy in England our school ski trips were always to this resort, largely because it's altitude meant it was open till May, and so would fit into our school Easter holidays.
it has a decent range of runs with plenty for intermediates and a few black runs.
In those days Obertauern had few hotels so we would stay in Radstadt, a picturesque walled town about 30 mins drive away. Radstadt was accessible by train and had skiing too but was of a smaller and less challenging, though it is more sheltered than Obertauern which being at the top of a pass and above the tree line could get very windy.
