Hello everyone

I understand this isn't quite on topic but hope someone might have an answer.

I'm flying business class (on points) to Frankfurt in Early October and returning early November. I've noticed that the skybed rollout schedule on the QANTAS website indicates that the rollout is due for completion this December on that route.

Does anyone know if they are on, in front of or behind schedule? I've emailed QANTAS but haven't had a response yet and I'm not holding my breath.

Regards

Peter

Qantas has now completed the upgrade of all the 3-class aircraft. So that means routes to LAX/JFK and LHR via SIN/BKK/HKG. The two class are due to commence upgrade this month (Feb). I have not heard of any going down to AVV for upgrade yet. VH-EBU, the last of the 747-300's to get the Dreamtime seats in business class and IFE in economy went down lasgt week.

SO I would say they are pretty much on schedule. Given that the upgardes for the 3-class were on schedule, I would expect the 2-class to continue on schedule. The only thing that may get in the way is the change from 50 Skybeds to 64 Skybeds on some of the 3-class fleet. Also note the AVOD upgrades are to be stated for the A330-300's this month, and for the 744 fleet from May, so that may also impact the 2-class Skybed rollout, but we won't know any more about any possible interuption for a few months yet.

Wow...how did you get hold of such detailed information? And what/where is AW?

AVV is Avalon, near Melbourne where Qantas carries out its 747 heavy maintenance and upgrades including Skybeds and IFE systems.

We could tell you, but then we'd have to kill you. :D

The information is widely available in various magazines (I subscribe to four per month), various other bulletin boards (this site is one of six I look at), and then we have our contacts (I have several contacts within QF ops). So it is just a matter of spreading yourself around and taking in as much info as possible.

Dave, sounds like its time to get a life :P . No wonder you are often on-line in the wee hours of the morn (don't ask me how I know that).

Hey, in my job you need to unwind at the end of a shift. The mags get read during quiet periods.

i'll be on QF 123 (sydney -> mumbai) on the 29th of June... any chance of the sky beds installed on that flight by then?

no chance. That is a 747-300 route and the Skybeds are there are no plans to fit Skybeds to those aircraft. Only the 747-400's are getting Skybeds.

The good news is that all the 747-300 now have Dreamtime seats. The last remaining aircraft with the old cradle seats is now in Avalon getting its upgrade. So the 747-300 fleet have almost new interiors.

Dave, just wondering which magazines you subscribe to?

Australian Aviation, Aircraft & Aerospace, Flight International and Airliners (the latter one mainly for the pics, you can't believe anything you read in it).

And don't forget our mate Rod Speed (or even Pretzle) over at aus.aviation news group. Personally I only use Airliners.Net for the pictures, the forums there are a waste of time in my opinion. Fully of kids with no real knowledge, just opinions that are not backed by experience.

Could not agree more regarding the A.Net forums, although the trip reports forum can be quite valuable (at least at the start of the thread.).

Haven't seen Rod around for a while, although PretzDill is still bobbing up occasionally (for the uninitiated, he reckons a QF 767 deliberatly dumped fuel over his house whilst coming in to land - he is a loony).
