SkyBus gone up again [Up to $23.90 one way]

Hours extended...

"Melbourne City Express now 4.30am to midnight

With airport activity increasing by the day, our Melbourne City Express will operate from 4.30am to midnight, 7 days a week from this Sunday 20 December.

That’s right! Fast, frequent and $15 summer fares – and now longer hours of operation."

Avalon back too.
Yeah just got the email myself. Interesting timing given the NSW shutdown...but it makes the Skybus viable again, at least.

On a couple of recent visits to Melbourne's Southern Cross bus terminal (not to catch Skybus), few were using it. On one occasion I was there at 0800 hours on a Thursday when I'd have expected it to be busy. My sample however is tiny.

I think it's interesting that the SkyBus is now content charging an everyday price of $15 to Tullamarine. I would have thought that their costs and therefore fares would go up as they lost economies of scale. It just goes to show how much they were price gouging customers at the former $19.75 fare.

Still price gouging at A$15 a trip. 70 cents plus a kilometre for what is a glorified public bus service.

This will help reduce the cost. You can only buy one way tickets but buy two at once to make the most of the $25 discount code. Two adult tickets for $5.

I was only able to use the code once.

Taking into account the Skybus takes most direct route which involve multiple tolls $15 is not bad price.

Off course one can chose to take the less glorified 901 bus then train from Broadmeadows station and save few shekels if time is not of the essence.

wow $2 per child

it pays to be Airport Staff

SkyBus understand that our unlimited travel ticket was popular, however it is simply not equitable to other travellers to continue to subsidise one ticket class so heavily. SkyBus is after all, a private company that does not receive any financial subsidy from government for running the service.

The new ticketing structure for airport staff will be as follows from the 1st August 2018:

  • New 20-trip $90 ticket ($4.50 a trip)
  • New 40-trip $155 ticket ($3.87 a trip)

If my memory is correct, as a result of a deal to upgrade its buses in about 2008, Skybus has among its owners the Victorian State Government with about a 7.5 per cent share.

The previous owners retained about a 30 per cent interest when the Canadians bought in.

I bet Skybus received a lot in JobKeeper subsidies!

I notice SkyBus has gone up again, to $18 one way and $30 return.

Still cheaper than a taxi I guess!
You are right cheaper but not necessarily better than a taxi or ‘ Uber experience where you do get plonked-off in the most desired place. Like outside directly of the First Lounge checkin, where after you realise there are no flights out to anywhere on Qantas international. Bummer.

Skybus BNE Service commenced today- $15 one way fares for 50 min trip at 2 hourly intervals 0600 - midnight weekdays (8pm weekends).

Airtrain comparison - train starts 0500 weekdays (0600 weekends) and last service departs BNE 2200, around half the journey time for the same price (advance purchase).

Here's another Placie code to try: CUBES30 for $30 off or 2 Adult trips for free.
