SkyBus gone up again [Up to $23.90 one way]

Wouldn't the airport collect some ridiculously high access fee from each train ticket? I don't see why they would prevent that.
No, it's being built by the government (for better or worse) and they've seemingly committed to running it as a Metro (or whatever the operator is called when it opens) service.

It’s ~25 min ride to Southern Cross, how much time will a train save…
None, I would wager the train will take longer than almost every Skybus journey except during absolute peak times.

In the next 30 years? I have no doubt MEL AP will fight it and find any excuse to prevent it.
Manyyears ago, when Brisbane Airport was being privatised, at the same time as the new sky train was being built, I was on the team advising a prospective buyer of the airport.

They asked if it was possible to prevent the new airport train stopping at the airport if they bought it. This puzzled us 😊 but the rationale was that they would get a lot out of taxi concession fees and the train stopping at the airport would cut into that.🤣.

last week I think I used skybus for the last time.

They don’t want any staff selling tickets and the machine I tried to use wouldn’t take the payment, the guy next to me on another ticket machine paid his money and no ticket came out.

It was the same the next day on my return to the airport (by private car) I walked to the check in via the skybus ticket machines and there was someone there not able to buy a ticket looking for a non existent ticket seller.

I’d be happy to pay $25 if everything worked and ran as scheduled. But management seems to be trying to cost cut their way to a larger profit. I hate to tell them but that doesn’t work.

An airport train that doesn’t stop at the airport… That’s sounds like something from Yes, minister! 😳

There was a bit of a quiet pause in the meeting for a few seconds.

The same group, were also looking at buying I think it was Darwin Airport which then was reasonably new. They said how awful the departures area was. I thought that was a bit odd, I previously lived in Darwin and it was a good modern airport. After checking in, you could go straight to the lounge or the gate with little fuss. No, no, they said, that’s hopeless. What they would do if they bought the airport was put about five bends in the corridor and about 30 more shops before anyone could get near an aircraft.

These guys knew how to run an airport!

Replace free parking with $50 per minute parking….

use the app. it is pretty good.

You can still buy the Skybus tix online, as on laptop, if you are app less.
I did the app, have it on my smartphone, easy set up, but I thought it would have a discount.
But not so, still pricey for a one way.
Also, while the app makes it easy for them, not sure how it relates to earning points in the Skybus system.
Much better than being in the queue at Tulla.
Edit: ah, so no airport tix selling for Skybus now, onsite, ta for that one.

Re: Melbourne Airport train serivce, like SYD, its coming though, and there will be an airport surcharge for that service.
Not to mention, MEL airport rail link will be a public service, so your ride will be a normal train.
Not sure if it will have specific baggage zones, and if its an end of line service like BNE.
Imagine, it might will be like SYD.

$16 if return. Anyone know a promo code ?
When are you travelling? There’s sometimes promos around Boxing Day, New Year etc Usually useable for a couple of months out.

Setting up the app is not hard, or difficult.
Actually, if you have a smartphone, buying it on the app is easy.
Just have to set it up once and for all, and on the right of the screen, it shows ticket wallet, and the tix is there.
Tap it and the QR code comes up.
As easy as the QFF app.
Granted, your smart phone must be a bit newer, and have enough space for the Skybus app.
If you travel on Skybus often, its a good one to use.
Yes, I know the 901 bus can be cheaper, and accepts Myki, but you do travel on the Broady line with the rest of Melbourne, with no space for your luggage on the train, even with HLO you have to vie for space.

$32 return but $19.75 one way (for those leaving forever…).
Keep in mind a "return" is actually just two one ways on the same barcode. So you could travel twice from CBD to airport for example. But expires within 3 months.

Handy for some. E.g. I often don't have time for the Broadmeadows + 901 one way but do on the other.
