Try the earlier/later button and see if the option to go via Broadmeadows appears.

Tried that. I speculate with some services offline it has created some bugs in the system. Times from Broady to the Airport shows the 901.

Fair enough ... for those in the southern regions, the 901 is more efficient. (The 478/479 from Essendon was 20 minutes quicket than the 901.)

Possibly worth it given that the V/line would be, in essence, an 'express' service to Sunbury.

The 479 operates M-F hourly from 0600-1900 if that helps. but only twice on Sat and Sun.

On weekdays, not too bad northbound with only 20 mins wait between bus and train. Southbound more of a pain with 37-45 min waits.

I have extensively used the 901 in past years.... Note NES tourist seem to travel free!!! Never seen a ticket inspector. The regular drivers change half way thru trip to train station! Some drivers don't use heaters on bus! Smoko at airport make you wait to board. Broadie train always late and bit worrying/freezing/exposed waiting for train the city side with no police!

My bloody opinion is if the trains into / out of the city are free if you reach your destination before 7am, why can't the bus?

We always price up the airport car park and the offsite parka before booking. The only time we take skybus is when we know we will be drinking the day we return and won't be safe to drive (eg barossa trip).

I can't remember the last time I got off a plane and was safe to drive

Probably because the trains, trams and busses are all operated by different companies.

Fair comment the operators are separate but the actual fare structure and it's enforcement is done by the PTV.

I think its origin was as a special concession to the reduce post 7.0am crowding of trains in the morning peak.

Out of the 346 bus routes in Melbourne, how many of them do you think reach crush loads before 9am? Very few of them, compare that to Metro network in the same time period, all routes, almost every train.

Train usage has doubled in 10 years unlike buses.
A typical passenger pays 30% towards the cost of providing the service. By catching the 901/Craigieburn service you saved $18 by not paying for a profitable service, and instead freeloaded off the rest of us.

One part of the system, i.e. the trains are overloaded, therefore it is logical to try and move demand to other times.
