From a comment on the link:

QANTAS have it in their safety video on all planes too and have done for the last few months. "If you loose your phone, don't move your seat and call a flight attendant" (or words very close to these)."
The penny has finally dropped: I kept trying to figure out what that was all about.

Just looked up the ATSB record of the incident, it states it happened near JFK.

Investigation: AO-2016-066 - In-flight fire involving Boeing 747, VH-OJS, near John F. Kennedy International Airport, United States, 21 June 2016

The ATSB is investigating an in-flight fire involving a Qantas Boeing 747, VH-OJS, near John F. Kennedy International Airport, United States, on 21 June 2016.
During cruise between Los Angeles and John F. Kennedy International Airports, US, a passenger’s mobile phone became trapped in a seat reclining mechanism. As the seat moved, the phone was crushed resulting in a fire. The fire was extinguished by the cabin crew.
As part of the investigation, the ATSB will gather information from the aircraft operator.
A report will be released within several months.

It's at odds with the other articles I've read which all stated it happened between SYD-LAX, but all the articles are stating QF11 as a 747, not an A380 (which is what QF11 normally is between SYD-LAX). Whilst I'm willing to believe ATSB over a news article (since they are investigating the incident), it's interesting that all the news articles so far have all said the same thing and it's the ATSB's description which is different. Me thinks that the media didn't even spend 10 minutes fact checking.
