Hello All

I travel (constantly) mainly in Asia and have a real problem using the Lan cables in hotel rooms. I can recieve e-mails and access the net fine but when i go to send an e-mail I normally get a failure message and have to change the SMTP (outgoing mail server) before I can send e-mail.

This usually involves half an hour of "discussion" with the hotel staff in Pidgin english before I can get the relevant SMTP.

Does anyone have a list of SMTP addresses by country/city/hotel?

Cheers

If it's such a problem why don't you use your servers OWN smtp server.....

If you need hosting that offers this, hit me up for a great rate ;)

Howdy,

The reason why ISP's don't allow you to send mail from outside their networks has to do with SPAM. Its called 'mail relay'. Basically you are relaying your email mail from one network to another to send.

Some ISP's allow you to 'My server requires authentication' in the 'Outgoing mail server' properties of outlook. But most don't.

As d00t said, the best way is to have your own SMTP server account.

Another option is to have a hotmail or Yahoo account, set up with your email address as the return, and send through there (Via Web) and CC to yourself as a copy for your records.

Hope this helps.

Check with your ISP whether they have a web mail facility. Many ISPs do and when in a hotel you can send mail through their webmail interface

You may also be able to set your email client up so that it "authenticates" with your ISP before sending email.

As discussed by others, locking down SMTP access is done for reasons of ISP security.

Probably best if you pose the question to your ISP (or use Webmail as Dave Noble suggests)

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the great idea's.

I will mull over my options this week.

Can you explain what would be involved in having my own server?

PS I also run a Blackberry, would that be a problem with my own server?

Probably silly questions but I iz just a umble enginer.
