Looked at a hybrid recently, given our time of life and value for money, we decided to go with a petrol engine. The comparable hybrids were way more expensive, and yes I'm biased, but I will avoid any communist china produced car, ev or ice, that unfortunately includes Volvo.
I will add that my bias also includes anything made by tesla. Sad? I know, but I have my reasons.
Battery power will improve, I'm sure, but I'm very happy with my decision and I'll live with it.
As for VW's issues, I'm sure all the makers did the same, VW was just silly enough to get caught!
Of course as usual ymmv. 
I will add that if we were much younger, or we had grand kids, My view might be very different.
