Some nice QF fares from OZ to USA

These cheap fares are making it more difficult for me to justify using points/miles to the US right now. I was planning on using QF points (classic reward) or AS miles. Now I think I'll just buy a Y cash fare.

Well the current sale finishes Friday

I scored a DFW trip for $1048 (Saturday more expensive) with 36F both ways.

Feel the same once adding the Qantas outrageous fees to the award flights, better buying a ticket and possibly going for upgrade.

We flew J to LAX in March for $4999 on QF; these specials have same deal now for $7603 - ouch!

TAs seem to have these same fares, and can't beat them. I gather there's no real advantage using a TA for these then. I tried adding a domestic AA flight from Boston - JFK on the same PNR, but that didn't work with this sale fare.

With 20mins remaining for the sale fare, I have decided to not pay the cheap cash fare and instead pay a cheap Y fare to HKG and use points from HKG to SFO/JFK.

Its what we have done a few times, its so dam hard to get QF award flights in J to - from the USA, they are so stingy, yet out of HKG direct to so many US cities (and miss LAX) and also european capital cities on CX, a breeze with near zilch fees, sometimes used QF points other times used AS miles.

That's my plan. I may use qf points one way and AS miles one way. Depends on availability.

That is the go, especially the return if using AS miles as they will allow a stopover in HKG and do not class it as two sectors where a lot more miles are required. As have miles sales about 4 to 5 time a year the recent one finished last week. You need to find the CX award flights first before calling as they can't be seen on AS site. However the QF return from OZ in Y has merit too.
