I have a Qantas award ticket (one PNR) BKK-AMM-BKK on RJ in business class for later this year and would like to split it into two one-way PNR's, as I may wish to cancel/change the outward leg in due course. It's not possible to make any changes online, due to the numerous previous schedule changes.

What would be the best way to achieve this? Is it possible/likely that this could be easily achieved by calling up (I'm Gold so will no doubt get an offshore centre)? Would there be a 5,000 point penalty for doing this?

I'm concerned that if I speak to one of the offshore agents my booking may be inadvertently cancelled or mangled beyond repair. What thoughts?

I don't think you can "safely" split the trip in two PNR. You can drop one of the leg, but I don't think the agent can guarantee he can make a new booking with the award he just detached from the current PNR. Inventory might just not go back in the award bucket. So it's a bit of a gamble.

Is any of the two legs still available for J award booking now? If so, I'll book it (assuming you have the point balance in hand), then call to drop that leg from the other booking, and fight to get the itinerary ticketed fast of course.

There will always be a risk of the call centre doing something stupid when you alter a booking. That's just reality. You will also need to pay 5k points per pax.

I thought that might be the case. So I'll probably leave it as is for now and if I need to change/cancel one leg I'll cancel the award ticket and book a revenue ticket.

There's virtually no availability of anything out of Asia showing on the Qantas website at the moment.

Just keep in mind that any changes will need to happen before commencing travel on the PNR.

Changes

Up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight:
  • The following changes are permitted up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight in your booking:
    • change to name (only for flights with a Qantas (QF) flight number on the ticket that are operated by Qantas)
    • change to class of travel
    • change to any segment routing (including departure, stopover or destination cities) or airline

If you want to keep the return, exchange the ticket and drop the first segment. It's 5000 points change fee and you'll get the taxes back and points back for the segment being dropped.

If I need to make any changes I think I'll leave it until next month, when I expect to become Platinum, and hopefully get access to more experienced and knowledgeable call centre staff.
