As many would be aware, it's Cup weekend in Melbourne.

I didn't really acknowledge it until today, but this morning I realised I'd have a four day weekend with absolutely no plans.

That is simply unacceptable.

So what do I do? I'm sitting at a cafe reading the paper, and think: how far could I get, if I only have a few nights?

Before I know it, I'm sitting in the SQ lounge in SYD, en-route to SIN.

This is no F or J TR (although it will earn me a tidy 15k VFF points for later use in J/F), so nothing exciting here, but it is an adrenaline-filled last minute jaunt to ensure no free time is wasted and every last dollar and minute to my name is spent travelling.

I understand many do these last minute trips frequently, but for me it's totally nuts and I literally could not explain it to friends when I cancelled on a party tonight.

I have a problem.

Okay – boarding is called.

I don't see a problem. You saw an opportunity and took it.
Do remember you're among friends here and we've all done it.

Enjoy SIN, am currently in BKK and loving it.

It's a common problem for AFF members...enjoy

I'm glad you had time on your side. And the dollar.

Enjoy mrsmart - where you staying? How are accom prices? Yesterday I checked Hilton SIN for Nov 8 - S$350 / Nov 2 S$650 - last min pricing in SIN can vary wildly.

Checked in to a charming little place that I wanted to try called Lloyds Inn. $560 for the three nights. Could not beat those prices at either Hilton or Conrad, and none of the other independents really take my fancy here.

This is like a low-rise miniature resort just near Orchard MRT.

And lovely fit out too.

Looks fantastic! What are the amenities and service like?

I only booked a quick trip to SIN a few weeks ago with JQ in order to get me over the line to requalify for WP by DeC 31st.
I was Able to secure 80SC's for a little over $5.00 per SC.... Not the absolute best value, but certainly not the worst either.
SIN is a good Destination to spend a day or two if your looking for a quick getaway from Aus , which isn't too painful in terms of length of journey.

Definitely basic. No restaurant or room service. Breakfast is included at a local cafe.

Staff are nice, but no one's carrying your luggage around here.

But for what you're paying (in a market like SIN), it's pretty good value.

I'm always torn. I like the whole Hilton thing. Big breakfast spread, exec lounge, staff who fawn (in some properties), someone to carry your luggage. But you can't beat how low-key this is. Suits the setting perfectly.

Nice one!

I've gone well over the 800 SCs to re-qualify VA WP (sitting on around 1740, with another 140 about to credit for this weekend) so I can't even use that as justification.

But you're right – it's the perfect distance. Any longer than that 7 hours in Y and I'm over it. Under that, I can just maintain my enthusiasm. And perfectly doable for a weekend. I love it.

Sitting at home last Friday arvo, Mrs lime said we must buy a pad on Gold Coast, jumped on a jet 3 hours later, hired a car booked into hotel, went out for very nice dinner and Saturday purchased one on way to OOL was back to Cairns Sat. night. I mean what impulse...

THAT is spontaneity!

Well what a fantastic weekend I've had.

I got around to all my favourite spots. BooksActually in Tiong Bahru – they have cats! Eaten some amazing food, like at a little tapas place called Esquina. Tried kaya toast for the first time, which is delicious. Did a hot yoga class (it wasn't supposed to be hot, they just didn't use air con). Ran through Fort Canning Park before it got too hot this morning. Spent today working at a fantastic co-working space called The Working Capitol (pictured).

Really do like this city. It's not perfect, but has a lot going for it.

Has such a buzzy, entrepreneurial spirit and provides constant surprises. I'm a fan. So happy I got my act together on Saturday.
