A few questions on SQ upgrades:

(1) Is it permissible to upgrade only one leg of a return journey that you have booked on Singapore Airlines using your points online?
eg if you have booked Melbourne - Tokyo - Melbourne, can you upgrade the forward journey only?

(2) In practice, if given sufficient time, what are the realistic chances of an upgrade application being successful?

Your best bet is to give SQ KF call center a buzz and ask them if Upgrade is available for the sectors you want to upgrade before any flights are booked. Personally, I only upgraded to J on Mel-Sin-Bkk and given there was no points difference between Mel-Sin-Bkk and Mel-Sin, I always upgrade the whole way thru.

Based on my experience, you can Upgrade One-Way or Return online. Again, call first before booking, you have more chance of succeeding.

Good luck.

(1) Yes, you can redeem one-way upgrades online. Depending on the flights you are taking you may not be able to user 'saver' upgrades.

(2) Unlike QF, SQ upgrades are processed straight away, and you get a confirmed seat. If booking online you can pre-allocate a seat, etc.

SIN and BKK are in the same redemption zone, therefore you might as well upgrade the whole trip (it costs exactly the same). This also means you also get access to the lounges in SIN.
