As with some other airlines, SQ is introducing a so-called 'invitation only' email system to allow biddable upgrades from economy to premium economy.
While all airlines want to maximise revenue, is this an admission that premium economy is not selling all that well?
Will it cannibalize yield in that the small percentage who book PE will 'hang back', book Y instead and submit the lowest possible price that is accepted by the computer program for a biddable upgrade, have it accepted and therefore travel at a combined lower fare than would have been the case had they booked a PE fare? Mind you, it may be that SQ does not make this offer available to those who book in the lowest, or cheaper, fare subclasses in Y.
Historically, hasn't SQ been famous for not offering 'free' upgrades? I have never been upgraded on it, unlike on competitors.
