Hi,

I'm new to this forum and have recently discovered the concept of status credit runs.

I am currently 150 SCs short of Gold status and reassessment will occur on 30 April. I have a return flight SYD-MEL-SYD in 2 weeks but this will only earn me 20 SCs (still 130 to go!).

Later this year (July and August), I have two international flights (SYD-LHR-SYD and SYD-DFW-SYD) which I booked as sale fares. This is exceptional, and I wouldn't ordinarily travel this much in 1 year.

I'm trying to figure out firstly if a little extra effort now will be worth it for the additional benefits of Gold status, and also if there is a relatively cheap way of obtaining Gold?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Will it be worth it? Two words - lounge access.

We consider lounge access is everything when we're traveling and the priority check-in. However you can get lounge access as a Club Member - which works out cheaper - chasing the status credits and paying for flights or an annual club membership?????

But you can access a wider variety of lounges as one world sapphire than as QC, which is also worth considering, as well as the other benefits like better seating.

I think it would be worth it given your upcoming trips will earn you close to an extra 13000 points as SG, fly to CBR, grab the CBR-HBA via SYD JASA then grab a flight back to SYD, the benefits of Gold are yours for the cost of the two rededeals, given the JASA points used are paid back in extra earn along with the earn on the JASA itself.

Totally agree. QF + OW lounge access, better seating make it worthwhile for mine given the cost is almost totally recouped in this instance.

Similar situation here. Boyf was borderline Silver/Gold, travels overseas for work in whY a few times a year, so aiming for gold was a no brainer for lounge access alone. With only about 150k points in the bank and aiming for an eventual RTW J redemption in a year or two, burning points on a JASA didn't seem all that sensible. The best option looked to be SYD-AKL-SYD on LAN in J for $750 return (booked on expedia or LAN's US site, not lan.com.au which is inexplicably much pricier). 80 SC earned each way. We had a nice few days on the North Island, pleasant enough flights on LAN - apart from one surly Chilean dragon who was most put out when I interrupted her newspaper reading in the galley to enquire about an in-flight duty free purchase.

From MEL you just have to tag on a cheap Red-e flight to SYD and back. (there's another 20 SC...)

Mind you, far more experienced AFFers than me probably know of better opportunities flying out of MEL.

You can get it for $750 on the Aus site - it seems the allocation might be a bit smaller, so may sell out quicker than the US site, not sure. But I was looking at the end of the year and could get it for that price.

Other thing ex-MEL is a MEL-BNE JASA - would be either 48k points + $100-ish in tax, or around 60k points and would get 120 SCs.
