This has probably been answered many times, but I'm still none the wiser.

What happens when you reach say Gold in a membership year and then accumulate some more SC's? Are they just lost when your new membership year commences, or are they carried over (as they are with EK)?

From the point of view of getting status, they are pretty much gone. You get reset to zero on your anniversary (a depressing day for sure)

However, they still continue counting toward any lifetime status.

Being LTSG, I am also aware they accumulate 11.1 QFF points each.

Every 450 returns 5000 of the critters.

This is unlike the Air-NZ Airports recent change where Top Level "Gold Elite" need 1350 SP's to re-qualify.

Now, up to 650 SP's earned over and above that are carried forward to the next re-qualification year. If one gets 650+ SP's more for a total of 2000+ in a year, a complimentary "Gold Elite Year" is "banked" for the member; should they ever fail to re-qualify GE in the future. These "banked" years of Gold-Elite are coughulative.

Without wanting to sound like an annoying kid in school, my dad is on the Qantas customer advisory panel and has a couple of times provided them with feedback on this.

His reasoning is that my parents do a big trip every couple of years, and that normally nets them 400-500 SCs with their other domestic flights. But in the "off-year" they only get about 100-200.

He has suggested that all SCs that you accumulate above the status earned roll over to the next year. Haven't heard anymore back (feedback was provided fairly recently). Needless to say this year his Silver status was renewed with only 80 SCs, well before the year carries over. Might have been a manual intervention I think.

I think if it was capped at 50% of the SCs over that year's requirement that could be a fair way to do it. Eg. If you hit 1000 SCs, then 150 of the 300 SCs over gold could roll over, or something like that. Would be better for loyal but inconsistent travelers like my parents. They are loyal and always fly QF/OW but may not always fly a lot each year.

I could see QF eventually implementing a rollover/banking system (like Gold Elite above), but only over 2400SC that makes up WP+PG. While every member is loyal, I just can’t see them ever caring about someone like me or a Silver member even. That’s sort of where that PSR business comes in.

They don't appear to care about their WP+PG members from my experience.

Thanks for your comments, eveyone.

So I guess my approach of not booking any further flights in a membership year after I have achieved my target status is the correct one.

Seems strange that QF would do this, as I'm sure it's losing them business (well, it is with me).

I'm in two minds about the current QF approach. In fact I'm almost at the stage where, horror of horrors, I think QF should raise the bar for WP and SG instead of offering double SC's or rollover credits.

QF, either, won't look after it's most frequent flyers, or doesn't have the resource to. :-|

I was thinking this as well - it is very frustrating that promos seem targetted at people who have not been as loyal to QF as I have. I realise that the reason for targetting is to make people who arent flying, fly more whereas they can safely assume I will fly with them...

This is however contrary to basic customer management which says that it is cheaper and easier to retain a customer than acquire a customer...

While that may be the case, I still think they’d look after them first, before any lower tiers.

This isnt true in terms of promos though.

By the same token, one aspect of marketing is to drive extra revenues out of existing customers. You want to do this by identifying the customers you think are most likely to increase purchasing their product if you give them a reason.

For other customers, where you think it unlikey to increase revenues, perhaps some other tactic is needed.

Totally agreed about the double SCs promotion. Totally devalues the meaning of status.

Why look after your most loyal flyers when they remain loyal through thick and thin.

It would be much better to dangle carrots in front of the not so loyal flyers who are likely to run off when another airline dangles a carrot in front of them anyway. Does not make sense but I guess such is life....
