hi chaps

As you know, when qantas does a multi city run (the ones found at the bottom of the booking page) the ticket price usually reflects the increase in miles flown, eg if i am trying to get from Adelaide to Sydney, and have to select a flight which goes via Melbourne, i pay through the nose.

One exception is flights from Adelaide to Canberra, where the price of a business ticket from ADE-CBR is the same as the price of a business ticket from ADE-SYD-CBR.

The points calculator indicates that while a flight from Adelaide to Canberra generates 60 status credits, a multi city flight going Adelaide-Sydney-Canberra is theoretically worth 100 status credits.

Does this mean I can effectively get 100sc on an $850 flight? If so I would gladly fly the longer route.

Yes it does and many AFFers will deliberately choose the routing shown to avail themselves of the extra SCs and FF points.

This is due to a fare's route construction rules.

The J fare from ADL to SYD has a base fare of 923.48 and has the following allowed routing at this price:
Code:
...
SYSTEM DATES - CREATED 27APR11/0933 EXPIRES INFINITY

PUBLISHED RTG ADL-SYD/QF9998/TAR-TGRG EF-28APR11 DIS-INDEF

/WITHIN THE EASTERN HEMISPHERE/
[B]TRAVEL MUST BE NONSTOP OR DIRECT[/B]
So MEL is not a valid transfer point so to go via there changes the fare to those for ADL-MEL and MEL_SYD.

Contrast this to the J fare for ADL-CBR with a base fare of $895.46:
Code:
...
SYSTEM DATES - CREATED 27APR11/0930 EXPIRES INFINITY

PUBLISHED RTG ADL-CBR/QF9009/TAR-TGRG EF-28APR11 DIS-INDEF

/WITHIN THE EASTERN HEMISPHERE/
[B] 1. ADL-MEL-CBR
 2. ADL-MEL/SYD-CBR[/B]
So travel can be via MEL or SYD for this fare.

Of course, the reason for this is that QF has only two direct flights per day to and from ADL-CBR. In Y the indirect flights are often cheaper than direct.

I usually take an afternoon flight via SYD so that I get to CBR in time for dinner.

The extra SCs are a welcome bonus.

This is awesome guys.
Trying to hit Gold before my NAN run so this as a JASA would certainly help.
Have to go to ADL for work twice before the end of the year too!

How else does anybody think I maintain Gold? :o If I have the time then I'll always go the multiple city route, whether paid or a JASA.

One of the classic sayings of a true frequent flyer is 'Why fly direct when you can connect?'.

Pretty much sums it up....

ADL-TSV is probably better value, not sure why the 2K of points difference adds to much to the $$$ required, 10586 points is $111 to go to TSV while CBE seems to be a discount, 8300 odd points for $57!
