Bit of a newbie here.

I am flying to the US for work and have the option of flying Qantas from Sydney to Dallas, then AA to NY. The flight will be on business class, but I noticed that AA only have first class on Dallas to NY leg. Would that mean I earn status credits for first class or business on that leg? If so, it seems like another reason to fly via Dallas rather than from LA (as well as missing the fun of LA customs and immigration...)

AA domestic first class from DFW is a bit similar to Qantas domestic Business class here.

If your ticket on the AA flight books into F, A or P classes then you will earn first class SC's.

Note that if on a QF codeshare flight number (on the same flight) then it books into business class (J, D, I) even though in the same cabin and one Business class points/SC's are earned.

Also one thing to note- i have heard stories that on a codeshared J ticket- they may seat you not in "F" but in Y....

Thanks for your help.

I have been told the ticket will either be D or I class - not that I can see any difference between them.

So you will be on the QF codeshare flight number, DFW-NYC.

D and I class are "Discounted" business class and earn as for Business class.

I could be sitting on the seat beside you travelling on the AA flight number in A or P class (Discounted First Class) and be earning First Class SC's and QFF points.

i.e. You'd earn 90 SC's, I'd be earning 120.

Serfty, I'm unclear on what you say here. How do you deduce that the OP is on the QF codeshare? In D class (as in a DONEx with no QF codeshare sectors on AA 2-class aircraft), I sit in F and earn SCs at F level.

On further checking, I have yet been unable to find a QF codeshare flight number for DFW-JFK.

If nuglas is on an AA flight number, they will not be in D or I class as AA do not sell Business class on DFW-NYC flights.

Here's an example, QF has a codeshare flight on AA metal from DFW to BOS. Below is the fare bucket availability for the same actual flight.

While Qantas do sell First class (F/A), AA do not sell business class (J/C/D/I). Generally booking onto the QF flight number one would be in J/C/D/I.

Not an expert here but the flight from DFW to NY is a QF code share - flight number is QF4393. The flight class is coming up as D on the provisonal E ticket.

To add to the confusion, I am taking a flight within the US from New York to Madison, WI via Chicago. The NY to Chicago flight is on AA and is P class. The Qantas website says that:

"P booking classes are included only when booked as part of a Qantas & Jetstar Any Seat Award and solely for the purposes of eligibility for Points and Status Credit earn"

Does that mean I would not earn any SC for the this trip? Seems a bit odd not to be being paying more than normal economy fare yet not get even discount economy SC.

On further checking, there is no QF codeshare flight number DFW-JFK. I guess this makes sense as Qantas already fly QF107 to JFK.

If nuglas is on an AA flight number, they will not be in D or I class as AA do not sell Business class on DFW-NYC flights.

Gotcha, thanks Serfty. I was forgetting that on the DONEx the AA sectors are actually ticketed into A on 2-class a/c, not just the PAX put in A.

I'll look again for that codeshare.

On Qantas flights, P class is for First class Awards. On AA flights, it represents Discounted First Class.

Since you are on an AA flight number NYC-ORD, you need to look at the American Airlines[sup]®[/sup] (AA) part of the airline earning table.

P class is generally what an instant upgrade fare(YUPPS) books into. You will earn F SCs if in the F cabin. However if a change of equipment, cancelled flight you may be bumped to the Y cabin. You would then earn full economy SCs.

... and for that reason one should generally avoid booking on the three class AA transcontinental 772/762 flights (as well as QF flight numbers) on a DONEx/DCIRnn in order to maximise SC earning.

Certainly and my memory never fails me enough to remember that!

And why do a transcontinental when 2 sectors will give you even more SCs!;)

I'll look again for that codeshare.
...
OK, Found an example.
