G'day from FNQ,

I've been up here for 2 weeks, and I'm due to fly back to Melbourne on QF on 02 March.

However, I would love to stay up here for another week, and I've seen a Jetstar flight that leaves CNS at 1840 direct to MEL, which is perfect for me because I'm staying a few hours from CNS.

The question I have is regarding Status Credits. The information on the JQ website is awfully confusing. Next to the column "Loyalty Rewards" it says "Included -Earn loyalty points or a Jetstar Flight Rewards Voucher
Flexible Fare*"

Furthermore, on their website where it has the earning tables, it says the following (very confusing and doesn't specify whether it's points and SC's earned or just points):

Starter Plus -Economy

Starter Max -Flexible Economy

Starter Flex- Qantas Points and Status Credits are not earned on Starter Flex fares except for travel on Jetstar New Zealand domestic flights. These bookings will earn Qantas Points at the Discount Economy.

THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW:

My QF flight on 02 March (CNS-BNE-MEL) will earn me 30 SC's as I've got a red-e-deal.

That being said, (and this is what I want to know),

How many (if any) Status Credits will I earn if I fly Jetstar from CNS-MEL (direct) on:

a. A starter Plus fare (is it 15)?
b. A starter Max fare (is it 30)?

OR

Are they just going to give me QFF points?

Would really love to know as I find this extremely confusing!

Thanks so much in advance to all my fellow travellers out there. I can't wait to post a trip report upon my return!

Cheers!

As you highlighted, your current QF flights will earn 30 SC as a red e-deal (15 SC for CNS/BNE and 15 SC for BNE/MEL).

You will get both Qantas Points and Status Credits if booking a Starter Plus or Stater Max fare with Jetstar, as long as you select the Qantas Points and Status Credits option over the Flight Rewards Voucher when prompted during checkout.

Starter Plus: 15 SC plus at least 800* QFF points CNS/MEL
Starter Max: 30 SC plus at least 1200* QFF points CNS/MEL

* The amount of QFF points you receive will increase if you have Silver or above QFF status, the points I've quoted above are for a QFF Bronze member.

Hope that helps!

Yes you essentially have it.

Starter Plus will earn discount economy rats, so 15 SC
Starter Max earn Flex Y = 30 SC.

A few notes about JetStar, as a QF Gold who flies them regularly in part to retain my Gold status, in part because the fares they have are cheap. When possible book QF Max since that books into Flexible economy which will earn the most QFF status credits (aside from the odd time where QF runs double status credit promotions). In addition to the extra status credit and miles, there are several other benefits that come from a JQ Max fare over a Starter fare that people may not realize:
  1. On flights that only have economy (i.e. Starter) fares you can choose any seat on the flight you want. As COVID is still an issue, I'd recommend choosing a front row seat since it reduces your exposure to COVID (i.e. you'll be the last on and first off) to say nothing of the extra legroom.
  2. You get a checked baggage allowance of 30 kg which for most people will be enough when travelling
  3. You get a $10 meal voucher for food on board
  4. Most flexible cancellation/change policy
Another thing that's crucial to realize is the milestone benefit you receive for every 500 status credits where you can get either 8000 bonus points or 50 extra status credits applies only when you take Qantas or Jetstar flights. Hence you can spend a lot of time on cheapo JetStar discounted Max fares and easily rack up extra status credits towards QFF Status.

One final thing to note departing out of OOL, particularly if like me you want to enter the QF Lounge is to check to see when QF flights are operating since the lounge only operates when QF flights are operating. I learned that the hard way arriving at OOL at 17:00 for my 19:30 flight only to realize the QF Lounge was closed.

Will the QF fare be forfeited?
Forgot to mention that the BNE-MEL leg of my QF flight has been cancelled, so I still have to manage/select a new flight. Besides, I booked it separately to my DEP flights as I spent a bit of time in Brisbane before heading up north. That being said, could I not cancel the CNS-BNE-MEL leg for a credit voucher if I choose the JQ option?

You may be entitled to a refund due to flight cancellation?

My understanding is when an airline cancels a flight on you, your ticket becomes fully flexible. That is you can request a refund for cash, or you can pick another flight of your choosing with QF up to a point (i.e. within a week of the originally scheduled departure). At least that has been my experience on other airlines like United and Air Canada.

Before covid it was $15 on longer routes. MEL-CNS would get $15.

I'm not sure if that's still the case.
That may very well be the case. I've only flown JQ on shorter routes like SYD > AVV or SYD > OOL. I'm guessing the voucher goes up based roughly on the status credits accumulated? So like a 20 status credit flight would net you a $10 voucher, whereas a 30 status credit flight nets you a $15 voucher and a 40 status credit flight nets you a $20 voucher? Basically the "exchange" rate would be $5 in meal vouchers per 10 status credits accrued?

Domestic short haul will net you a $10 meal voucher (i.e. SYD/MEL)
Domestic medium/long haul will net you a $15 meal voucher (i.e. CNS/MEL or SYD/PER)

Meal voucher is the same for both Plus and Max bundles.
