Hey guys,

I am based in Canberra and I am 190 points from Gold. It will reset by 1 April. I've been reading the forum and there are a fair few suggestions to the most cost effective way in attaining the gold status.

Do you guys have any suggestions / tips to how to attain gold? I will fly down to Melbourne in late Jan for the melbourne cup, but what else could I do to get my gold status?'

p.s. Does ticket obtained via ff points get me any status point?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Flying Wolf,
I'm only new to the forum so others can probably help you more with the most cost effective ways etc. I do have a similar story though. I am also based in Canberra have another 100 sc to go until the end of Feb to move up to Gold.

With regard to earning status on flights booked with points make sure you check out the thread about booking a JASA at at Classic Award level points and cash. You do earn points and SC on Jetstar Any Seat Awards but not on Classic Awards.

Last week I flew J Canberra to Melbourne on a JASA for $80 and 16000 points and earned 40 sc (thanks to the advice and tips on this forum). I've read that JASAs to Hobart are good earners too. If you want to pay cash for some - from experience flying Canberra to Townsville return can be reasonably cheap for flexisaver fares - a connection in Brisbane would earn you 100sc. Same thing with a return trip to Adelaide through Sydney.
I'm interested in hearing other suggestions too! Good luck.

Anyseat Awards will earn points and status as mentioned. What flying plans do you have? Besides Melbourne in Jan.

Just on that point what is this Melbourne Cup that happens in Jan? Edit:

Sent from my iPhone using Aust Freq Fly app so please excuse the lack of links.

JASA CBR-SYD-HBR would get you a nice 200 SCs, just what you need to get to SG.

There is no Melbourne Cup in January. The horse race Cup is in November. The Tennis open is on not sure about horse races.

My bad! I do mean "Australian Open". Shouldn't post stuff when late at night. Surely the mind's not working properly (or at all). Thanks for the suggestions so far (including the cheeky ones ) Will definitely look into it.

BTW, why do people want to do Points + $$? Is it only this way you can earn status point?

I don't think points + pay is worth it when booking a seat the normal way. I use points + pay when booking a JASA to basically save points. Rather than paying 24279 points you can pay 16000 points and $80. I think that is pretty good value for money - you can then use the points you save to book half another JASA.

Whether you pay or not doesn't determine whether you earn points or status... you always earn on an Any Seat Award :)

All points plus $$ allows you to do is offset the points cost. with classic awards you still need to pay taxes etc, so they aren't always "free". so sometimes it is better to do a combo of both.

Do you lose your points if you have to cancel a flight booked as JASA.

That depends on the fare rules but generally for domestic flights you get a 100% refund of points and cash.

I am in a very similar situation and am based in Canberra. I will be just over 200 points away from renewing my gold status this year and have booked a CBR-MEL-HBT-SYD-CBR J class flight for 32,000 + $190 odd. While I will only earn 180 SC's instead of the maximum 200 I could have received if flying to Hobart through Sydney, this did provide me the advantage of not having to stay overnight in Hobart (due to the Qantas schedule) with the total trip completed in less than 9 hours on one day.

What about international flights. I am very confused. Don't want to lose my points if I have to cancel. Thanks for helping me with this.

Fare rules vary by departure country and destination and there are some restrictive business and first class fares that would result in points or $$ loss if changed/cancelled.

Book - Flights - Fare Types

For instance looking at ex UK in J, Business Savers offer NO refund for cancellation
