At the end of this year I will be platinum, but it's likely that next year I will be doing no travel at all.

Will Qantas drop me right down to Bronze, or do they lower you to Gold first?

The first thing they will do is to contact you, either via mail or email, to indicate that they do not think you will requalify and asking you to give an indication of your future travel plans.

Now, I am not suggesting you lie to them, but just plan out a first class RTW and then tell Qantas that this is what you intend to do. Based on past experience here and on other boards, you *should* get comped to Platinum for another year (happens most of the time, but not always). Of course, peoples travel plans change, and something comes up preventing you from undertaking the RTW. Bad luck, these things happen.

From there on it a drop of one level at a time, so down to Gold, then Silver, then Bronze.

I've seen this comp to platinum thing go both ways - I know people it worked for and people it didn't work for. My travel is quite variable, tends to consist of a lot of flying in a short period followed by often lengthy periods of not travel. When I got the letter from them, I went for the 'there's no guarantee's' bit, then gave them my guess at travel plans (which to some extent matched the places and fares on my record), plus a couple of international segments (which seemed important to the person I spoke to) and got comped. I know someone who tried a similar approach and got dropped to gold.

Meaning that its really the SC I make from March 2006 to March 2007 that really matter because they are the ones I need to retain Gold (and thus the free QC membership, which to me is the biggest bonus of this whole loyalty program).

Correct. You drop one level only each year if your have not satisfied the SC's needed to hold that currently held level

Absolutely. The SC's you make in year 1, determine your level in year 2. You then get those benefits through Year 2; while you are qualifying for year 3. And so it goes on...

Assuming your membership anniversary is March, as long as you qualify for Plat by March 2006, you will be Plat until at least March 2007, even if you qualify as a Plat in June 2005. They will give you one full year of Plat, plus the rest of the year that you qualify in, so potentially 23 months if you time it right.

Given the one level at a time (I assume each anniversary of status reassessment) is it there a case to try to achieve Platinum so that you effectively are Platinum for the next year, then Gold the year after without any travel or not much travel. How can the 'one level at a time' be confirmed with Qantas?

Its a shame this only works from Platinum down. Its a pitty that WP+PG doesn't just drop to WP. Looks like I'll make WP+PG this year (and that on only three trips), but who knows what will happen next year??? Could be one trip, could be 4 trips in the year.

Of course Lifetime Gold is the target to get ongoing access to the Qantas Club lounges.

I found extimating my next years travel to be difficult, hence I gave them the 'no guarantee's about this' speech. As it turned out I did renew Platinum the following year and I was staggered at how close my travel was to what I had told them.

At this point of the year, I am not sure I would be even achieving a silver renewal.

Lifetime Gold is on my radar as well. But have to get to Lifetime Silver first, but I'm past half way on that.

That is obviously a concern, and why I am keen to cross the barrier before any changes to the target are put in place. Two more trips should do it.

Of course, once I hit Lifetime Gold, they will likely change the program to introduce a new top-tier such as Plutonium, and water down the benefits of Gold to the current waste of time that is Silver. Then I will not be a happy camper.

Thought: if 1400 SCs is require to reach Platinum status, but only 1200 SCs are required to requalify for Platinum, does that mean that 14,000 SCs are require to reach LTG, and only 12,000 SCs are required to requalify for LGT?

Naah, I plan on living forever ..... so far so good .
