Need some advise. I've been trawling through the site, and had a look at the excellent resourcew. I'm now at the stage, with about 3months to go, needing another 330points to reach Plat.

I've a couple of Sydney -> Singapore trips coming up(officially on Y), and would like to know what I can do to maximise and help me get to that elusive level.

Here are some of the things I've noticed/tried:

a) try to book a 1 way from SIN -> SYD on a non Y class. It looks like Qantas has dropped a few flights ex Singapore & if I don't do a SYD -> SIN -> Syd via qantas.com's Australian site, the number of flights I can choose (when booking through the Singapore site) dramatically reduces. Most sectors (when using the Singapore site) routes through BNE or uses BA.

b) use JASA to go from SYD -> SIN. Comparing 3 weeks ago when I made my first booking (on business) on a Sunday ex SYD via Perth - there does not seem to be any 'specials'

Any hints on why (a) would be happening, and what I should look at to maximise my SCs?

Thanks!

Well if you want to maximise SC's then routing via BNE is a good option as you will net at least 10sc each way, or up to 20 based on the fare class.

Play around with JASA ex-SIN to ADL (a routing like SIN-xMEL-ADL 160sc) ... its only 50K points (you may get lucky and J is not available and you will be in F SIN-MEL for example) .... from there, ADL to SYD via MEL using a JASA (80SC). Do two of those and there you go ;)

You could check fares in "J" on Jetstar. Pseudo business class, but real business class status credits.

Try some options out of SIN if you have time. The J fares on Jetstar Asia maybe a go but there is a great CX flight SIN-BKK-SIN which is cheap and 15 SC points each way in Y. Usually an older 777 but a few days in BKK is never a bad idea. This flight can also be used as the long way to HKG for extra SCs as well.

As SQ is the 1st choice for most SIN based pax, get on the JAL/CX .com.sg websites for specials. Great deals have been had. Sign up for the email lists.

I know some regular travellers on QF to SIN have booked a one way to SIN then get the return flights out of SIN to save about 20%.
ie. Flight MEL-SIN one way and book SIN-MEL-SIN to coordinate with their return journey on this trip and the outward journey on the next. It might keep the $$/SC down for you if you have a few trips coming up.

Cheers.

Consider JASA to NZ. I'm doing a status credit run next week from Mel to Akl via Sydney in Business (return). Results in 120 SC each direction so 240 return. Add to that my double status credit option just received and I'm very happy :)

good call, as an example

BNE > SYD > AKL return in J is 240 SCs and can be had for 102k points or 72k + $318 (and earn approx 8k point in the process so net 94k)

Fly Y to TPE instead. There is a BR codeshare flight on some days of the week, or you can do it via HK on CX. Then, fly TPE-HKG-SIN on CX in I - use your own money if you have to. Should work out to only about $650 AUD including taxes. TPE-HKG-SIN return in I get you 240SCs. You should be able to make up the remaining SCs with your 2nd trip, no matter the routing.

The JQ "business" class MEL-SIN is another option, which gets you 240SCs for the return trip. Probably simpler to implement than the above option (and I can't imagine many would be willing to have a BNE-TPE-HKG-SIN routing).

For an extra $40 odd you can go CNS SYD AKL for 72K and collect 320 SCs! Net cost is closer to 60K after points earn.

How do you work out how many SC's you get when flying this route on CX

Don't give a man a fish, teach him how to catch it ;)

PS not personal at all!

Absolutely, and to provide a bit more details now that I am on a real computer, enter the details in the One World Explorer Validator and click ignore errors:

Update on this - I've done the required travel - combination of routing through Perth - Sin, as well as Jetstar business (Mel - Sin) and finished off with FASA BKK - SYD (90k points + ~$500AUD - cannot remember the exact amount).

Now sitting on WP with about 2 months before the reset occurs.

Next challenge: to maintain it...!

Thanks for the hints everyone.
