Hi All,

I lost my QF Silver status start of last year and wish to regain it before an international trip at the end of March. I am just a plain old Qantas Club Bronze at the moment :(

I already have 50 SC's so need another 250 SC before 15th March.

Apart from the obvious SC runs such as the LAN SYD-AKL or AP SYD-NAN runs (don't have time for these runs at the moment), I would like some suggestions on good status runs within Australia dep from Melb (or Avalon).
I also need to do it within a strict budget, around $1200 total for 250 SC's within Australia.

Is this doable or am I crazy? Please post your suggestions!! :)

Thanks all!!

Why do you want silver? What benefit will it give you that you couldn't buy for less than $1200 ?

Hi All,

I am QP NB and have some international trips booked this year and will gain PS by the end of the year. I was wondering why it is an advantage to be PS before the international trip?

Where are you going, it may be profitable to look at a run as part of your trip? Otherwise you are going to find it hard to spend that sort of money and get the required SCs, keep in mind the NAN run could be done overnight and you can put it on hold at MEL, alternatively you could start two NAN runs and stopover at SYD then due the NAN part later in the year.

*Advance seat selection (and better seats)
*50% more points
*Better chance of upgrades (I've had good luck in the past with upgrades whilst QP silver, Y to PE. Y to J.etc. no upgrades whilst QP Bronze)
*Free Q Bag tags (these are about $40 each)
*1 free QC pass (handy for those times where I have more then one guest)
*I have a few international trips in late march, I may be able to make it to Gold if I do the groundwork now and get to Silver now. (status reset 30 April)

I think you are mad to spend that kind of money for silver! Responding to your points above in order.

* Pay for exit row seats on your international flight
* Are the 50% points worth $1200, ie would you pay $1200 to have those points?
* Upgrades - minimal increase in chances IMO, there is a long line ahead of you! (CL,PO,WP,SG,PS!)
* They are just bag tags! And aren't useful for international flights at all. Saves you all of 2 mins at the airport on domestic legs.
* Worth it to have it in the wallet, but put a dollar value on it.
* You already have Qantas Club access, so I think it really depends on what your future flying is going to be. No point having it if you aren't going to be able to use it.

What you have listed above might add up to a couple of hundred dollars in benefits at most, so is it worth it to be $1000 out of pocket just for a silver card in your pocket, IMO, no way.

hmm, for $1200 I could have a short break in itself. Each to his own I guess.

So where are you going overseas, $1200 goes a long way in some places, like SG territory!

Simply not worth it. All you're getting is Bronze to Silver..and you're hoping to get the advantage for just the one interntional trip in the next 12 months?

Now if you were a few SCs short of Gold AND you have several interntional trips in the next 12 months, then yes I'd say go for it. But from what you've indicated above, the $1200 is better spent on something else. Use some of that $1200 to pay for seat selection.

Only the OP can decide if PS is really worth it in relation to their circumstance.

I assume you do not have enough QFF points to consider a domestic JASA?

The reality is that 250 SC's is a tough ask to do within Oz.

I guess you currently have about 50 SC all up?

Shame you don't have the time even for LAN nor NAN.

For revenue bookings, with $1232 you can fly to LAX and back via SYD/BNE and earn $110 SC.

Then a YUP to SEA and back via SFO for USD840 can earn another 300 SC's and then you have blitzed PS and are on your way to SG.

This can be done over the March Labour day long weekend ... :p

I agree, yes I realise $1200 is alot but still Silver is worth it for me (and provides a path to Gold).
Also one thing I didn't mention was the couple of International trips I am doing in March/April will be 4 of us in total travelling on the one ticket (2 of us are QP Bronze, other 2 just Bronze), so for seat selection $20 x 4 sectors = $80 x 4 people = $320 just for seat selection for the trip.
or $1280 for exit row seats the whole way.

If I had silver it would allow free seat selection to anyone on the same ticket?

In the next 12 months I have another 2 International trips planned, and on average 2 domestic flights per month.

Exit seats are not complementary for WP, let alone PS.

(BTW, that $2100 trip I mentioned would also earn ~20,000 QFF points, and should earn 4000 more with PS status kicking in before the return to melbourne)

Pity the bonus points for the QP joining have finished, could have used them as payment for a 48K JASA that earns 280SC!

I have just signed up to the ANZ Income protection insurance and life insurance offer on the Qantas homepage.
Gives 10k bonus points for each policy signed up max 20k points bonus and then 1 point per $ spent as well for the fees.
Income protect cost me around $13 a month, you must keep for min 6 months, so $78 for 10k points not bad!
Life insurance was about $21 a month for another 10k points.

I find Jetstar Business Max to Singapore and back to be a handy way to get some SCs under the belt very quickly (ex-MEL). I'm not sure it can be done within your budget though, as it usually comes in at about $6-8 per SC, 240 SC total. Note that it's a bit cheaper to book it as two one-way legs as the SIN-MEL leg is cheaper out of Singapore.

You would still be better off doing this IMHO, even if you dont take the final leg its still 100 SC, note that date of that final leg

This time last year I signed up for 3 policies that cost ~$8 a month and only had to keep them for 3 months, though ended up paying for 4 to ensure I got the points. Just under a hundred for 30k points was a third of what I needed for the JASA run I’m doing soon.
