I experienced a bloke next to me whose morning breath at 1730 was appalling...

I rotated as much as I could away from him with my feet out into the asile, but unbelievably the stink breath was stalking me. The 1700 SYD/MEL A330 was bulging at the seams, no spare seats, so I had to grin and bear it.

This got me thinking about a conversation I had with a CSM one morning regarding stink breath and her reaction. I don't remember her exact comment however she did say "feel sorry for the ground staff opening the door, they rub vicks or tiger balm under their noses prior to opening the door".

I have often thought I could smell tiger balm on alighting AC in the morning!

There's another good reason to carry Vicks (especially if travelling alone).

I always carry xx_ mints, apart from making me smell better I think they have the same effect of stopping you smelling other things as well.

I used to work at the airport back in BRU and when you open the door of a long haul the stench is really unbelievable

It seems that during a flight there can be a build up of odours from the exhaled breath of 100 or more passengers over the course of the flight.

This is not completely cleaned by the air conditioning and generally goes unnoticed by those on-board as the odour build up is gradual. It is those from outside the aircraft who are near the door when it first opens that cop it in the face.

Similar happens on crowded suburban passenger trains - I often change at Richmond and when the door of the inbound carriage opens the smell wafting out can be quite earthy (especially on cool fresh morning).

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Definitely not, try 300+ pax squashed in a Biman Bangladesh... had several occasions where we opened the cabin door and went straight out of the side door of the aerobridge

Eww.... this entire thread is making my skin crawl... and munitalP, I don't envy you one bit... maybe you should carry some Smints around with you in future :)

Talk to my partner about her experience with meeting long haul flights in London that have come from Jamaica or somewhere in Africa. She doesn't speak fondly of them.

I always grab 1 or 2 mints when I leave the lounge, just in case...

Maybe the airline should hand them out prior to landing, mints for ground staff sanity

This thread could contest the recline issue in the 'other corner"

Sure, have had my experiences with many of unsavoury experiences with 'chatterbox" with breath that could 'kill a brown dog "

I kind of politely divert to the headphones or retreat to a vacant seat 10 rows away!

The worst is the putrid showerless individual ( excuse unknown & unwarranted ) that decides to take a flight & share their agonising BO with the rest of the passengers.. & without going into details.. we all know the stereotype..

Perhaps have a stench breath &/or body odour meter before one boards the a/c to approve or deny access :):(, so as not to create misery for the remainder of the 50-398 pax & crew!

Before i get on a flight I always splash some aftershave on myself and if there is a smelly person next to me I also do it mid flight as well and sometimes even before we take off as well.

Do you accidentally splash them as well  :D

The aftershave one is a good one, it not only keeps you smelling good, but it stops you being able to smell others.

I am sure it is the same with women and perfume.

That's so Disgusting ! Bad odors from people, especially their breath is my biggest hate !

I will admit i am very OCD about it

Brut or Old Spice is a rather strong & lasting variety

I have actually been physically ill from a kuwait airways flight when flying in the middle east. I was the only foreigner onboard it seemed, seated on the middle of Y, in the middle of a 3 on an A320. After 2 hours, my body could not hold it in anymore. The smell was disgusting (of my neighbours, not my vomit!)
