Have been trying to price a SYD-PVG-HKG-SYD segment for next april and so far have multiple options. $1933 in V fare bucket or to go cheap and split it all up.

STA is offering $1357 for the SYD-PVG//HKG-SYD legs with QF. PVG-HKG I can either book as an award or for $360 with CX (can't go with another carrier as mother will be on CX).

Problem is that a google search turned up mixed results on whether student fares earn points and SCs. I save $200, but in return I might not receive points and SCs, won't receive points for actually booking with QF (another 1933 points), and then the hassle of multiple PNRs.

Any thoughts here?

i guess the safest way is to ask what fare bucket the STA tickets are.

I would if I could. I tried trawling on their site to find out with the fare terms and conditions but for the student fare they have replaced Qantas fare rules with their own text which mentions nothing about booking class nor frequent flyer points.

I tried calling them but as I am currently living in Germany, it is difficult to find time to call their call centre when its open. There is also a bad habit of disconnection every time I have called and then been put on hold.

Also not very confident with their call centre staff. When I called to price all segments as one PNR, they came back with a price close to 2.5k.

Starting to feel like paying $200 more to avoid the hassle is worth it.

I was recently in very similar circumstances. If the money is not a huge deal and the SC will be genuinely valuable for you; I'd pay the extra $200.

You can book direct with the airline then, too! Although, that's just a personal 'control-freak' preference of mine.
