Hi,

I'm being transferred to Vietnam on a work assignment for 9 months and I thought this would also be a good opportunity to explore the region and build up some status credits (my chief aim this year being to retain WP status).

I am not too familiar with oneworld flights in the SEA region so I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for cheap status runs from/to Vietnam? I presume flights will be cheaper ex-Vietnam than ex-SYD? I'll also need to go back to SYD a couple of times so I presume if I book flights from Vietnam to SYD it will be cheaper as well?

Cheers

Quite a few on here are taking advantage of the cheap CX J fares available in Asia at present, I would suggest getting yourself to Singapore with a cheap 3K flight then doing a run SIN-BKK via HKG.

Fly on 3K to SIN, then pick up a CX SIN-HKG-BKK-HKG-SIN.
If you fly on JetFlex with 3K, those flights count toward 4 QF qualifiers.
David.

Thanks for that. And the way to book the CX flights is via the CX web-site using the multi-city/stopover option? Is that correct?

do we need another thread about the CX status runs, this has all been answered over and over in the past couple of weeks

This thread was about cheap runs ex Vietnam, have not seen one before on this subject, the fact the solution has been discussed does not negate the need for the thread, after all the answers are hardly in a thread titled cheap status runs in Asia! I have been on this board for 5 years and still cannot find something I know is here, even if it has been answered over and over!

for the OP, you book online, its pretty easy but I dont think it will last! Note the early AM flight home with Jetstar.

And just to make sure you know, unlike on Jetstar Asia or Jetstar (Australia) the JetFlex fares on domestic flights within Vietnam, operated by Jetstar Pacific DO NOT earn QFF points or status credits. A crying shame, if they did Vietnam would be great for status runs!

Seems a little ambiguous. The web page Fare Rules seems to say you will. (Note the /vn/ in the link for Vietnam) But on Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions there is no mention of (BL). So I will take your word for it. I would try and fight for them though!

Thanks makris, that is most helpful. Before today I hadn't even known abou the cheap SIN-HKG-BKK J flights! Thanks also to dajop for the advice about Jetstar Pacific. Seems strange that you don't get points or status credits at all when flying with them.

Yes is a bit ambigous, complicated by the fact that through Jetstar Vietnam website you can book flights on 3K, BL & JQ.

The ^ beside the table row heading "Earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points and Status Credits^" on the /vn/ link you provided, does not include JetFlex on BL:
^ Qantas Frequent Flyers travelling on a Jetstar (JQ) JetFlex or StarClass fare will earn equivalent points per mile and Status Credits as earned on Qantas flights. JetFlex fares earn at the full economy level. StarClass fares earn at the full business level.

But it is wrong anyway, as those travelling on 3K do earn status credits. Talk about confusing, and I'm just basing my read on what's written in the QFF T&C - not from experience so I could be wrong.
