Survival tips for poor connections to Ottawa please

It looks like Dr Gumnut is going to Ottawa in a couple of weeks for work. The flights aren't booked yet but they have to be booked via his work travel dept. So I did a bit of leg work to find the most suitable flights for him which he then emailed to the travel dept. Only to be told they couldn't chose those connections and they had to put him on whatever flight options QF gave them. So the flights they are intending to book basically go from SYD - LAX - ORD - YOW. That's fine, he's flown that route before but they have him arriving YOW at 00.10 local time. Meaning it's too early to go straight to work (starting at 9am) and too late to get a decent sleep by the time he gets his car and gets to the hotel.

I'd like to figure out how to make the trip as smooth as possible for him given the coughpy arrival time.

other information:
He will be in J for SYD - LAX then Y for LAX - ORD - YOW
He is a QFF of NB status but will be silver by the time he touches down in LAX on the way over.
He is not a QP member.

So any tips, tricks or suggestions to be bright eyed and bushy tailed by 9am for his meeting?

Tell the travel dept to come back with QF/AC combos to YUL (Montreal). Qantas Travel CAN book other airlines, its just they like getting you onto Qantas metal. That will get you in there late at 8pm instead. Stay at the Airport Marriott, and take a bus/train combo to Ottawa the next day?

My flight to YUL has recently been changed to an arrival sometime around 11pm... not sure if that's a schedule change across the board but it might be worth checking out - if he arrives that late then there may not be an advantage over YOW.
