This report was, as required, tabled in Federal Parliament.
It has mention of a 'bat strike', notes poor patronage for one VA and one QF flight, mentions that at ADL 107 passengers had to be offloaded from a QR flight due to a technical fault and most interestingly of all, suggests that for a flight for which dispensation from the curfew was granted in SYD, only 60 hotel rooms for 443 passengers on EK413 would have been able to have been sourced in Sydney had the flight been prevented from departing:

It goes into quite a lot of detail in some cases. All flights with the exception of a delayed 5J flight have passenger and crew numbers quoted.
Quite fascinating and a good window into operations late at night.
I am not sure how many hotels EK would have contacted at say 2200 hours but as previously discussed airlines typically have arrangements with a number of hotels in each cities for rooms to be provided at a contracted rate. However that's not much good if hotels are full or close to it. There has been media comment at times that in SYD and MEL in particular, hotels are enjoying good to excellent occupancy rates. Arguably this is no longer true for PER and nor is it always true for hotels in provincial cities or 'the country', but the situation in these latter localities will not be identical from area to area and state to state.
