Have just booked a brief visit to AKL with China Airlines (A333 with angle flat seats) and return with LATAM (789 fully flat seats) for next month.
SYD-AKL with CI = $346 (no credit card fees)
AKL-SYD with LA = $313 (also no CC fees)

I've paid far more for Y trans-Tasman!

A nice find and earner!

Very nice find! Are these fares only available for travel next month?

I honestly didn't look for other dates. Someone on FFA mentioned it and I accidentally booked a night in Auckland... No self control...

CI does not appear to promote its TransTasman offerings very much but it is an option well worth consideration.

Some CI trans-tasman are seasonal. The MEL-CHC servise was like OCT-MAR or something. I don't think they are offering it this year (at least not yet)

I've never flown with them so I'll be keen to see what they're like and plan to do a video flight review.

They're an ok tier 2 (maybe tier 3) airline. Old equipment (unless they've changed their aircraft recently), not even angled lie flat - but a sort of hybrid recliner-angled bed. Food is basic. Staff are friendly.

For the price - an solid offering.

Really? I thought they'd be angle-fat skybed mk1 style. They're more domestic QF 738 J recliners are they?

I'll be interested to see what the service is like as I know very little about Taiwan culture (other than the awkward relationship with China). Should I expect Japanese levels of service, or more (mainland) Chinese?

it's a very generous recliner.... sort of 60 degree recline, with a legrest that sort of supports, but falls away. The resulting surface is not flat. I'd say service is sort of on par with mainland Chinese carriers.

Riteo I'll keep my expectations low. :)

Here's a trip report: https://freakyflier.com/2014/12/02/china-airlines-sydney-to-auckland-business-class-airbus-a330-300/ Although according to a recent report on onemilatatime it looks like the food might have improved slightly.

The freakyflyer link and some more discussion can be found on another older thread here on AFF: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....iew-china-airlines-sydney-auckland-75002.html

China airlines has two versions of the A330 - this one is the even older version of the 'generous recliner': China Airlines | Great Deals on Flights & Airfares | Flight Centre

But given the price can be cheaper than economy on other airlines it's still an outstanding deal!

Thanks for the link. Looks like a reasonable recline.
I wonder if they'll refurbish the A330s with the new A359 interior (China Airlines Airbus A350 interior delivery routes - Australian Business Traveller) or keep them as they are until they're replaced? If the introduce the A359 on this route it would make for a fantastic trans-Tasman option.

So for codeshare purposes will CI credit to Delta (as they're both SkyTeam)?

CI's angled flats are the same seat that VA used to have on their A330s before being replaced by their new suites, and are also the same seat that SQ's regional business class seat is based on and that MH uses in their A330s. It's a pretty solid product in terms of overall space and comfort but it's certainly not fully flat, and it's a solid generation behind the current best in class. For the hop to/from NZ, it's more than adequate.

CI have very friendly and solicitous service but everything is just a bit blander and frumpier than the better Asian airlines. Perhaps half a rung up from mainland Chinese airlines in J. Food and wine offering is probably the weakest you'll find in business on that route, with the possible exception of LA (whose wines would be better but, from what I hear, only has pretty basic catering on the short hop). For the price you're paying it's a great way to cross the ditch. In Y, they are a great option: comfortable seating with pairs at the window, decent pitch, often fairly empty cabins, cheap deals, and full-service with reasonable booze and personal IFE (albeit a fairly old fashioned system).
