According to this Flyertalk thread, there are currently some very decent business class deals with Qantas in business class from Sydney to Honolulu, for travel in March. It appears that Qantas is using 747s on this route in March, which obviously have more J seats than usual, so that could be behind the lower prices.

I'm seeing SYD-HNL return in J with Qantas for $2,500 available on various dates in March. Hawaiian appears to be matching with J fares for around the same price from SYD/BNE.

As an aside, QF Y+ seating for $800 return is pretty good! Especially compared to what you get/pay on JQ Biz it’s replacing!

I wish this was permanent aircraft change. It is crazy that normally QF have no PE seats on this very popular route, given that it is a longer flight than to HKG or SIN.

Early monring arrival doesnt bother me as Id connect to a inter island flight, its only the early departure taht is a bit of a pain.

So if you don't earn VA freq flyer points on HA would you earn Hawaiian Miles? It's a bit odd you don't earn anything on a revenue J fare.

Yes, it is very odd but the fare rules state "D" class, which is not listed as an earning fare class for Velocity. (I don't recall ever seeing a revenue fare book into an award bucket before? Either way, it's rather sneaky.)

I couldn't find anything that specifically says you will or won't earn miles with Hawaiian Miles, but don't see any reason why not. This is what is says on the Hawaiian website:

What flights are not eligible for HawaiianMiles?
You are unable to earn HawaiianMiles when you book the following types of flights:

  • Award or mileage bookings,
  • North America and International codeshare flights, and
  • Free or discounted flights.

The HA website has charts with eligible fare classes to earn on all of its partner airlines, but nothing for actual Hawaiian flights...
