AFF'ers,

I've searched the forums and everything is reasonably old so anyway...

Flying up the night before for our trip to Europe in July so need to book something for the night before and also need to book a night on the way back. Trying to keep it as cheap as reasonably possible. Is Formule1 that bad?

Any other recommendations? Not interested in food or internet, as it's really just going to be a bed to freshen up. Good transport options would be great too.

Any suggestions appreciated :)

I've only ever stayed in a Formula 1 once (about 12 years ago) and vowed I would never do it again! The mattresses were made of foam , and everything was just so basic!
BTW - the Ibis Sydney Airport came a close second.

I usually stay at the HI - comfy beds, decent sized rooms, restaurant or pub food, views to the airport, but be aware the shuttle bus is around $6 each way pp.
Friends have stayed at the reasonably new Quest Mascot Apartments but they do not have a restaurant. The prices also seem to have risen quite a bit since the place first opened.

The HI at SYD is not too bad. My mission in life is to avoid Formule 1 after my somewhat unpleasant stay in Belo Horizonte.

I stayed in the Mercure last month, after getting off QF32 before my flight home the next day, it was good for a Mercure. Friendly and efficient staff, reasonable modern rooms, couldn't hear any airport noise. Breakfast seemed to be surprisingly good.

Only thing I would have liked (But I don't think it's in the A|Club Benefits for Mercers) is a room upgrade. But meh, it did the job.

If you can get a cheap rate, I'd say go for it. I can't comment on the F1. But I'd hate to get a terrible night's sleep the night before a long haul flight.

I second the Mecure; there's often inexpensive nights available. In it previous existence it was a Hilton.

If you feel like it and don't have much luggage, it's an easy 10 minute walk from the airport, although they do have a (paid) shuttle service.

Thank's guys for all your suggestions. When you say inexpensive is $185ish right? I try not to stay at airport hotels if I can help it therefore have no idea about pricincg..although I do notice that that SYD airport hotels are not exactly close to the terminal like MEL.

My choices in order of preference at the airport:

  1. Stanford Plaza
  2. Quest Apartments
  3. Holiday Inn
  4. Mercure
  5. Sleeping on the floor of the terminal
  6. Ibis
  7. Sleeping on the floor of a public toilet after a footy match
  8. Forumle1
The Stanford can have quite reasonable rates if you shop around some of the internet sites like last minute..

Reasonable to me can mean under $150.

My stay there in Jan at a "50% off" pre-paid sale rate was $89.

You can probably get a cheap rate at the mercure but I wont stay there again - lack of sound insulation between rooms, very dark / depressing decor.

I'd go the HI (but then I'm PC Gold).

At $2.10 the 400 Burwood bus from the stop in Bourke Rd. about 30 m from the hotel (stops at T3 and T1) is good value. Usually runs about every 20 mins.

Edited to add that: T1 > 2 sections so would be $3.50

I'm PC plat and would still consider the Mercure over the HI all things being equal.

Why? (I haven't stayed at HI Airport).i rea

y didn't like the mercure although pending wind direction/room outlook there can be dome good aircraft spotting, and it's walk able to the int terminal with hand luggage only.

I recently stayed at the Stamford for $66 for one night. It was a Friday, but no one at the Hotel could explain the V low rate!

I had a gift voucher too. Try eating and drinking $180+ of food and beers between 2200 (arrival time) and 0600 (bus to SYD Intl)!

The Stamford is good while the HI would be my second pick being on top of mascot station.

That sounds like a challenge :D

Although departing in F SYD-CDG the next day so maybe not such a good idea :D

Thanks heaps for the suggestions everyone, time to start putting the booking engines to good use!

As a Plat I have received upgrades to the (2 room) king superior suite on quite a few occasions.

Yes, I have caught that bus a few times. It is really convenient but not so good when it's raining!

Guys,

Do you think I'm better of waiting for a sale/coupon and book then? Not travelling till July.. so should be alright, yes?

Guys,

Why not book a room at the Holiday Inn through Priority Guest (or Mecure through a-club, etc) and if a better deal comes along, then just cancel the first booking? Most loyalty programs allow you to cancel without penalty up to a certain time - for example, priority club is up until 1800 on the day of the booking (provided you don't select the advance purchase option).

I find that with Priority Club, the good deals tend to come on line between 1 to 10 days before the booking date; unless bookings are heavy of course, in which case they go up.

If a better deal doesn't come along then you just go with the first booking.
