Just a question of curiosity. When flying SYD-JFK, do you clear customs and immigration at LAX or in JFK?

Definitely LAX , and there is also an aircraft change to a A330-200 for the LAX to JFK sector.

Flew this just before the strike. Plane arrived late at LAX but the flight to JFK was held up to wait for the pax coming from Sydney. We were given passes to expedite us through immigration.

The flight that proceeds to JFK is the plane that has just arrived from AKL.

They usher you thru. I think it's a tight connection so you get special treatment

The A330 that did SYD-AKL-LAX will continue to JFK as QF107. Although, if status points are important and you don't mind traveling with AA, there are plenty of alternatives that can take you to JFK as well.

I would take the QF A330. Loads are lighter and you get better service and meals. Feels like continuation of your international flight. With non-US crew.
