SYD-LAX or SYD-MEL-LAX

I'm (WP) hoping to get an upgrade for a family member. I've booked ticket, SYD-MEL-LAX, a while back when the MEL-LAX flight looked fairly empty compared to SYD-LAX. Now both look fairly similar. If I change his booking to SYD-LAX and put in new upgrade request, will he be put at the back of the "queue" or does time of request not influence likeliness of getting an upgrade?

Time of request seems to no longer be a factor in upgrade priority.

What are the loadings on your targeted MEL-LAX flight? SYD-LAX?
