Hi Guys

I Need some advice..

I have an upcoming flight between Syd and San fran then onto Boston (AA).

I have enough points for an upgrade to business for the QF flights.

How can I make my chances better in getting a business seat?

If I cannot upgrade what is the best seat in economy for a 6'3 solid fella?

Also I notice that Flexi Saver is the most expensive economy seat- reading the fine print you only get SC as a discount economy?, My last Perth was the same fare and I got taxed an extra 6000 thousand points on the upgrade.

Any help appreciated as it is my first OS trip as a QFF and did all my Gold and soon to be Platinum flying on Qantas Link (thats alot of Anzac Bikkies and tea)

Thanks

Pog

Welcome to the QFF forum

As an everyday lurker I note that shortly the very good QFffer's will give you the good oil.

But from what I have gleaned from this site is that the chances depend on many factors.

Firstly it is a very popular route and is usually quite full even in Business. Qantas will sell a seat sooner than upgrade

But you are gold so that helps. If you make platinum before you go even better

Also if you are going very soon the loads are not as heavy around winter

There are programs where you can check what is still available. You will shortly get these from the experts

If there are unsold seats in the days before you go then your chances improve all the time

Best of Luck

I as an NB only have the option of using points for an award and need to plan almost a year in advance

For the experts (not me) to give you relevant suggestions you will need to provide the dates so they can assess possible load factors etc at the time of the flight, however, from previous experience on QF73/74 the inbound loads in J from SFO-SYD are usually full whereas there are often J seats available on the outbound flights from SYD to SFO. Naturally, not during peak/school holiday times.

If you have access to a fare buckets such as that provided by ExpertFlyer you need to look for High J and otherwise discount Business fare availability.

Therese fare buckets are J (Full), D (Discount), I (More Discount) & U (Award, dream on!)

For the last week in Jan, ExpertFlyer is returning the following:

Code:
26th: F6 A5 Z0 P0 J9 C9 D9 I0 U0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 G0 T5 X5 E0

Code:
28th: F9 A8 Z0 P0 J9 C9 D0 I0 U0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 G0 T9 X9 E0

Code:
31st: F7 A7 Z0 P0 J9 C9 D9 I0 U0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 R9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 G0 T4 X4 E0

There's no I availability (I0) so Business seat sales are reasonable. I would forget the 28th as D0 indicates that Qantas feel they will sell/use all/most of their J seats without any discounting.

That leaves the 26th and 31st, both showing D9. At this stage I would look at the Fist class seats both F & A buckets; A being discount. The higher A availability is there is a somewhat greater chance of J pax upgrading to First Class so F7 A7 on the 31st wins over the F6 A5 of the 26th.

So I would look at booking on 31st and lodging your upgrade request immediately.

Interestingly there's plenty of WHY award availability; having such availability this close in together with the current SYD-SFO sales for travel from 17th Jan to 31st march it seems that WHY fare sales must be sluggish.

Hi Mate

Can you do that for 18th,19th,20th,21st please

this is very helpfull info!!

Thanks

I have been restricting this to QF73; I'll continue with that although there are other options via LAX.

Also note your original booking must be on an upgradeable fare; which excludes the "Sale" fares in this case.
Code:
19th: F6 A4 Z0 P0 J9 C9 D9 I0 U0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 R9 L0 V1 S0 N0 Q0 O0 G0 T0 X0 E0

21st: F6 A5 Z0 P0 J9 C9 D0 I0 U0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 R9 L1 V6 S0 N0 Q0 O0 G0 T0 X0 E0
There was an ExpertFlyer trial facility of 20 queries available for AFF members. I'm trying to locate a link.
