hi guys im new to the frequent flyer community forum but i have read some helpful stuff, now i was hoping you could help me out

i have been flying from Western Australia to Philadelphia every other month for the past 8 months. since joining frequent flyer, i have been literally flying up the status and after my next flight in March i will be gold ;) so here my question for you all.

i have been flying from perth to LAX through melbourne as it seems cheaper (airport taxes maybe) and i have been leaving on QF 093 and back on the new A380 QF 094 i think. so the last 2 times i have been automatically upgraded to premium economy on the way out and not on the way back. when i asked the lounge staff why, they said the plane seating zones were allocated differently and it isnt possible for the booking to be upgraded unless i purchased it with points. dont get me wrong i'm not complaining, i purchased an economy ticket so i expect to fly economy so any upgrade is awesome. so anyway does the zoning thing make sense to anyone??

also now i have decided to fly all the way through to JFK (more points and i dont like flying on any american airlines) and was wondering what 747 they used for the flight? hopefully not the old girls they use for LAX Brisbane flight.

and is the seat config is the same as QF 093 that i usually take. i will be on QF107 (March 10th) out and QF108 (March 18th) back. That way i can shower at LAX before i see my gorgeous Fiance in Philly

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

QF107/QF108 is a 747-400, was last time I flew it. I don't think it's an A380 yet ... :?: someone may correct me ...

Not likely to be an A380 soon, but that's another discussion.

QF107/8 is a 4 class Pacific configured 747-400, and should be the same (or substantially similar) seat map as the 744 on QF93/4 (don't know about the BNE services). Check out Seatguru or Qflyer to get an idea of the subtle differences, but I don't think they're significant.

Btw, welcome to AFF Torry Head. :)

And not likely to be as far as I know. Rumour has it that from mid this year, the QF107/108 LAX-JFK-LAX will be operated by the A330. The QF107/108 SYD-LAX-SYD will still be a B744 or A380.

The A330 aircraft will operate to LAX as the QF25 via AKL.

Are there still some Qantas routes where the Premium Econ section is zoned as Economy?

This was a nice addition to my SYD-EZE trip in economy in August last year. I was able to get pre-allocated into a Prem Economy seat on an economy ticket.

As mentioned around the place on here and FT, the 4 classes sold as 3 is currently due to end at the end of April. First class will then be made available again.

I managed to take advantage of the 4 classes sold as 3 several times. Was a far nicer flight than being stuck down the back of the bus:)

I called Qantas today for my upcoming flight to Buenos Aires in April and the lady seemed to know nothing of it and said I needed to pay extra for Prem Econ seats.

Do you know what routes it applies to? Or have the link to the discussion?

Even the "4-class aircraft sold as 3-class" generally have PE in PE seats and Y in Y seats these days. I have not seen any Y in W seats and W in J seats for some months now. It seemed more common during the W cabin installation process.

Gotchya. I had Y+ seat as Y in October on QF73/74 but was not aware they'd just extended J to zone A and left Y and Y+ 'as is' :)

Check a seat map for your flight - if the front rows of WHY are 2x4x2 rather than 3x4x3 then there are PE seats being allocated to WHY PAX.

Qantas will also not call the seats 'premium economy'.

As serfty said, check the seat map. if it's 2-4-2, then just request a seat in that part of the cabin.

Throwing in a random date (April 14) for QF17 (SYD-EZE) shows a full 4 class service on this segment.

The flight on the 31st March is showing up all of Premium Economy being sold as Y, and Premium Economy in rows 11-18 of J, with J being Zone A and upper deck.

3rd April, 7th, 10th are all showing up the same. The 12th is showing up as a full 4 class service, so it looks like it's reverted to normal as of the 12th of April.

Re Buenos Aires, Qantas are now selling first class tickets for QF17/QF18 travel on or after Monday 12 April.

They have been pre-allocating some economy ticket passengers into premium economy seats on the 747s for dates before 12 April.

CheckMyTrip shows rows 34 to 75 for economy before 12 April but only rows 51 to 75 for 12 April on. Rows 34 to 39 have the 2x4x2 configuration.

What date in April is your flight to Buenos Aires?

Pete,
See my post before yours. Had already made mention of it ;)

My trip is:

10th April - QF17
26th April - QF18

Thanks for the tip on the 2-4-2 seating. Makes perfect sense!

Interesting to see that I have already been pre-assigned to 58A on both trips. Looks like an exit row seat.

58A/K are terrible* seats on all Qantas 744!

* unless you are < 155cm tall or have a close relationship with the PAX beside you ...!

I see! For some reason I keep getting allocated window seats in an exit row for the past few months. I called Qantas and asked to be moved to 58C and was told that I would have to pay the $160 fee to sit in that seat. So it looks like they don't sell 58A as one of those exit row seats.

I will still try to get moved. OR... say that I'm unwilling to help out in an emergency when they do the pre-take off drill.

Probably best to pick another seat now :)

They don't ask you if your willing to help in an emergency on a 744, because if the door needs to be opened an FA will do it...

So I'd be asking QF for a new seat now, because it probably won't happen once your on the plane.

They wont care b/c there is a FA station there and you theoretically dont need to assist in an emergency.......

Your flight on the 10th is showing that the Y+ cabin is being sold as Y, however, they're all blocked. You'll need probably SG or above to have these seats released to you for pre-allocation.

The other option is arriving at the airport and seeing if you can request as seat in rows 34-39. Only 4 seats are showing as allocated there at present, with the rest being blocked.
