I'm going to the USA in September - and in spite of all the wonderful promotional fares later in the year, the prices for when I am going are absolutely sickening.

Searched around and managed to get a fare for 8160HKD on HONG KONG Expedia from SYD-TPE-LAX on China Airlines. I am going to take my chances and hope that I remain alive.

Fare is economy from Syd-Taipei and v.v. and Premium Economy from Taipei to LAX and v.v.

Layover in TPE is 11 hours (during the day) outbound and 17 hours inbound (during the daytime also). Haven't been to Taipei since 1997.

Just a question: If I wanted to nix the last sector of my flight and make my own way from Taipei, would I be able to get my luggage out at Taipei or would they automatically have to be checked through to Sydney?

Right down there with CZ as probably the last airline i would choose to fly.
A long detour, long layovers and a Y+ im guessing is more like an exit row.

No thankyou.

Might be worth a look at the current AA buy points offer. It'll be a little more exy but hopefully you can manage CX J

At least on paper their Y+ is a new offering and it doesn't look too bad.

I actually am looking forward to spending a couple of days in Taipei.

There really were very few other palatable options, and, at my (relatively) measly income, I am still unwilling to ever pay for a premium ticket.

Absolutely nothing wrong with China airlines for the price. Also keep in mind it's Taiwanese and not mainland China which makes a huge difference.

Those same flights (SYD-TPE) are available as QF codeshare, although I doubt you can get that good a price on them!

You should be able to ask for luggage to be tagged only to tpe on the return just tell them you need to get stuff during the layover. Enjoy tpe it's one of my favorite Asian cities - the airport may be a little different to what you remember after its expansion recently

TPE is one of my favourite places to visit. It's certainly not on the Aussie tourist map yet, but I think that's partly to the expense to get there, and difficulty of using budget airlines to get to from.

I miss Air Asia flying from BKK. Roun trips for < $300 with luggage and food was a great way to have a week in Taiwan.

Airport bus will get you to Taipei main station in about 1 hour or less depending on the traffic, and from there it's an easy walk to XMD and lots of eating options. Cost for the bus is 120 TWD or ~$5 so not outrageously expensive like Aussie cities.

And then once in TPE the high speed train is utterly amazing. I just adored Kaosiung, and can't wait to get back and explore the mountains and the west side of the island more.
