SYD airport has been closed amid a huge lightning storm in Sydney today.

Several flights are on the ground awaiting the airport reopening, such as flights from CBR and MEL.

I'm monitoring the situation as I know someone on one of the flights. They have been stranded on QF1436 CBR-SYD since 12:46pm when it landed at SYD.

After nearly 3 1/2 hours, flights are being unloaded and it seems the Airport has opened again.

It was a very slow moving and reasonably intense series of storm cells. All clear now but more to come probably.

Turned my street into a fast flowing stream when the second band arrived. Fortunately I’m well above sea level!

The airport is obscured, West of Chifley, half way between Sydney and Bundeena.

On FlightRadar24 I could see lots of flights landing, but none taking off... The airport must look like a parking lot right now...
