Was looking on the V-Australia sight for some prices and noticed London as an option on where I could go, so I did a search, and from Sydney it goes to LAX and then hop on to VS8 to get to London. Looks about $2000 return in economy.

It's one way of getting to London I suppose.

I did look at going that way earlier in the year when flights to NYC were around $1K. Problem is that the "shortish" route over the Atlantic Ocean is the pricey part of it, which is a shame.

Yes, they just introduced it and have been advertising it the past couple of days. The LA-LHR sector is with Virgin Atlantic.

Would anyone fly from Australia to London via LAX? Its longer, and generally is more expensive too.

It is not always more expensive, and not that much further (24h vs 22h). It will oftern be done on an RTW fare.

I flew that way on a QF award booking one xmas as it was all I could get, it took 32 hours and was very painful! I flew on QF to JFK which goes via LAX, then BA to LHR. Dont do it! even with lounge access and a shower at each stop, it leaves you wrecked for days after!

That;s the long way (as you found!)

BA fly direct LAX-LHR which iirc is about 10-12 hrs.

Yep, it's the wrong way to go unless you are wanting to stopover in the USA, extreme jetlag.

I'm in the middle of doing it now. Well, the same trip, but did it a few weeks ago. I'm far from the healthiest guy in the world, but I didn't find it all that bad.

I flew MEL-LAX, few hours in lounge (shower, thank God!) LAX-LHR, and then also went LHR-TLV (after another shower!). Didn't find it all that bad, in the end. Was a little disappointed with the BA 747, but apart from that, was fine. A little nap in Tel Aviv and then I was more than able to function. Straight into meetings the next morning.

Plus the baggage allowance (and sightseeing) in NY, LA and DC on the way home all helped, but mainly I did it because it was only an extra few hundred bucks and I thought the side-trip to the States would be worth it. Don't regret it at all.

You know you can buy an LY ticket MEL-LAX-TLV and avoid the LHR stop, though it's a long winded way to get to TLV. It can be done as part of a RTW or return.
