Yes, it seems to be a lottery what type of seat you get on the SYD-PER vv flights now days.

I got the 2-3-2 (Middle blocked) on the red-eye PER-SYD, J, last time. Disappointed is all l can say.

This must be the route with the most types of aircraft for the same carrier.
My opinion from best to worst:
333 (I think all of them are int'l config, so Skybed Mk I)
332 (newest planes)
763
738

Can only see 767-300/300er or A330-200/300, can't see any 333, 332, 763, 738.

I thought Qantas J was trying to compete with Virgin on this route?.

332 is Airbus 330-200
333 is Airbus 330-300
763 is Boeing 767-300/300ER
738 is Boeing 737-800.

The 737-800 usually runs only on weekends.

My last few flights have been on the B747 with Mk1 skybed. This is my preference on the SYD - PER run. Again, the B747 just seems more 'fun' and authentic.
However on a very recent QF581 B747 the little engine in the tail of the plan was dead. So it meant no air-con as we got on the plane. Then when they brought in an outside generator-thingy to provide power to start the engines, it kept failing as well. Captain said they needed to get a "stronger" one as everytime they applied some load to the first one it wouldn't work. But we were only delayed by approx 20 mins. May be the B747's are getting old, so more prone to issues. Nonetheless it was still an excellent flight.

^+1, but from PER-SYD.
AVOD also didn't work for most of the flight...
