Sydney to Virginia USA one way 25 October 2017=how for max. Velocity point accrual ?

Hello

I need to book a flight asap - to fly one way from Sydney to Charlottesville, Virginia (Uni of Virginia) landing late 25 October or 26 October 2017.

I have been told (Uni of Virginia) I can fly Qantas / partners :
[1] Sydney to LAX or Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) then
[2] onto Charlotte (CLT) / or Washington Dulles (IAD) / or Chicago (ORD) then
[3] land in Charlottesville

But I need advice for which of these (or other) legs can be bought from which airlines (Virgin Velocity partners) - to accrue Velocity points, so I can retain my current GOLD status.

Can you help with this ASAP !?

Please send through which airlines and flights / costs for best value way to achieve this ?

Is it really one-way?

Do you have a choice in how to book or with whom?
