I'm flying SYD NAR about 16 April returning about 30 April and have 2 choices:

Qantas Y $999 - sale price
Jetstar J $2762 - with all the add ins (I do like to eat, will have booked luggage and will get SC and points).

Having read the Jetstar disaster stories, I'm inclined to go with what I know ie Qantas.

What do others think?

Given you already have lounge access by virtue of SG, I suspect I'd probably choose QF. I flew JQ *class MEL-SIN-MEL about a year ago and for what it was, it was fine (though they lost me when they changed from *class to 'business' class and charged for the MAX bundles).

But there is a BIG price differential in your case and AFAIK the only extras you'd be getting on JQ are business SCs/points (you still get 'em on QF, just not as many), pre-takeoff drink (no big deal), a bit more space (nice, but a judicious seat choice on QF would partly alleviate this), and maybe priority security/immi processing (which, depending on time of day, can be great or make no difference).

I suspect a judicious seat choice on QF would be a better option.

Edit: And on a pedantic note :) it is NRT (not NAR).

Personally, I'd take QF Y over Jetstar J in most circumstances. The JQ J product is not bad, but even at that price I would feel like you were paying a bit much for what you get. Plus you already have lounge access for the flight anyway. If the timing of QF works, book it :D

Depending on the flights you can get I might consider going with Jetstar. Basically, there may be soMe options that involve flying via CNS/OOL on different flight numbers, this could get a few extra SC. There is also the comfort factor, I flew CNS-NRT in star class in 2010 and I found the onboard service to be great. But then it did cost a lot less than $2600. I guess you need to work out what the value of $1600 means to you.

Thanks everyone. Thinking about it, I've realised that one reason that I'm "almost thinking" about Jet* Business is that the flights are during the day, whereas QF are overnight. As noted, access to lounges isn't a concern, but travelling overnight in cattle class is. And, cattle class in Jet* is definitely out.

I've realised that the other alternative is Y+ in QF. Have the 747s been reconfigured?

And thanks, realised my mistake after I first posted re Narita - of course it is NRT, not NAR. Too much haste.

In my opinion the Jetstar J price is too much, the JQ Starclass is an OK product but its not worth 2.7 times a decent QF Y seat. I would take that JQ J class for $1.5K but certainly not $2.7K

Go with QF Y - I did this trip a few weeks ago. The price differential is huge and remember, both flights are overnight so you end up sleeping most of the time anyway. So unless you really struggle to sleep in economy, then pay the extra. All I needed was my noise canceling earphones, one of those neck pillows and I slept well.

I fly CNS-NRT 6 times a year in J. The service has piced up ALOT ove the pas 9 months with service a tad above QF Dom J. Proper SIlver ware and cutlery 5 meal options, and 2 meals per fflight. AAs well as blanket pillow amenitykit and noise canceling earphones. Go via CNS on the SYD-CNS that continues to KIx and swap there. Also lounge access in CNS. It's worth it.

Thanks everyone for your assistance. I decided to go the QF Y on sale for $999, and shouted myself 2 exit row seats. Not that I'm tall, but it means that no-one can lean so far back into me that I can't get out (bad memories of my Y+ flight DFW-SYD last year).

Good to hear you got an exit row fjc have a great time over in Japan, I am sure you will be able to find heaps that you can do with the $$ you have saved by choosing QF.
