There was some discussion about going to easter island via tahiti...a while back
Has anyone actually flown syd/mel to papeete, then easter island, then santiago? I would like to do this plus on to new york. Maybe somehow integrate it into a circle pacific fare? Crazy idea but would be an adventure

We did this on a circle pacific fare on the route you listed and then from Santiago to La Paz, Lima, LA and home. However it was in 1996.

Easter Island is definitely worth visiting. You can see everything on the island in 2 days if you hire a 4WD to get around.

I went Santiago-Easter Island and back a few years ago on LAN as part of a DONEx. The flight continued on to Papeete and then returned to Santiago via Easter Island.

Agree with Stephen65 that Easter Island is worth a visit and a couple of days is enough. Not an awful lot on Tahiti IMHO but some of the other islands of the many are worth a visit.

I flew QF to AKL and then Air Tahiti Nui to Papeete. That, and the internal Air Tahiti, was a good airline in my experience when I went there last year but French Polynesia was very obviously in an economic slump.

French Polynesia tends to be a resort place, which isn't my thing; Easter Island not so.

I looked for fares to easter island last month and couldn't find flights on this purported PPT-Easter Island route. booking easter island in generals seems a bit of a pain and looks to be a job for a travel agent if you want to do it on one ticket.

Thanks everyone. Once the mortgage is paid off a very long Global Explorer is definitely my dream.
