Taking fruits and vegetables across state borders

Apparently you can't fly with a banana across state borders, but you can drive a truck load if you so wish.

If a banana is a fruit, then into Victoria is a problem. If it is a fresh herb, then not so much. What is it??

Well WA is usually stricter than the other states because with the nullabor and a few deserts separating us from the Eastern States we have freedom from some pests etc that the rest of the country has...

We've probably done a good job lasting this long without the Cane Toad but inevitably it will probably establish itself...

Being based in Perth, you should know how strict WA is in regards to this...

Flying inter-state you frequently hear about restrictions on fruits and vegetables across state borders. The following site has detailed info but I'm unsure if it is current...

South Australia

Edited...an easier link

lol at anyone who pays attention to this. Just take what you want, where you want. it's Australia. too many damn laws. As if the borders mean anything. They are just political lines on a map.

fly from the east coast to PER with fruit (for example) and then flying onto the Pilbara somewhere ... what are they going to do?

The question is what are you going to do bigjobs ? And the answer is potentially introduce some pest that can damage the whole fruit industry in WA. Laws are there for a reason and people who flaunt them should expect to cop full punishment.

lol ... righto.

Obviously, there isn't a blanket ban as one can see from the info. Armed with the info, I would be keen on testing AQIS if I fly domestic but through the international terminals, say T1 Sydney.

lol ... righto.

What's funny about that? I have seen the 'fruit sniffer' dogs in action at PER domestic, and have had my car searched at a state border. It makes perfect sense to try and protect your local agricultural industry, in fact it would be grossly negligent not to do so.

and I've flown from the east coast to the pilbara and not been searched because I didn't leave the airport.

also, there are many other places to cross the border than where you did in your car that time. Not everyone crosses at a point where inspections happen.

it's funny because people think some process is protecting WA (for example) from some exotic east coast disease.

Dad once took an Apple from (what was then) the Int CNS J lounge to BNE (CX flight) and had a huge argument with quarantine because of the Apple, despite it clearly having an 'Australian' sticker on it. They let him off with a warning, but it was absurd, even though you can see they had no idea.

I know there's issues between the states because I want to buy some chilli-plants from a store in WA and they wont sell them, or at least, wont send them to QLD.

Once a pest or disease is in it can be damn hard to eradicate it and it can cost the industry millions plus they lose markets they might never get back, and can cost the State millions to assist the industry, which sometimes can only be a damage limitation or containment strategy because you can never eradicate it...

While it might be slightly annoying sometimes, i have no problems with the sniffer dogs and methods of stopping foodstuffs coming into the State and fines being handed out for trying to break the law... It will never be 100% effective as we can't live in a bubble, but you can help them to do their job by not openly flaunting it... We do have bananas that you can buy in WA so no need to bring them with you... ;)

I have been taking fruits and vegetables with me SYD-BNE for ~5 years and have never had an issue.

Wow. Such ignorance of the reason for the restrictions. No fruit fly in South Australia. That's way there is a restriction. I assume the same for WA. So go ahead destroy the fruit industry in those states purely because you think you know better.

There is fruit fly in the south of the state, has been as long as I remember. There are internal restrictions on taking fruit to Kununurra, for example, as there is no fruit fly there. Similaraly, you you are not supposed to take potatoes from Perth elsewhere in the state as there is some disease only found in Perth.

While the issue is not fruit fly, there are various other insects, fungii, etc that they are trying to keep out of the state.

IME, WA is the only state that I have seen any sort of enforcement of the restrictions..

South Australia has checks on the roads connecting to other states and also have the dogs at the airport, sometimes.
